the problem is...i have no setup the allows the tv to be directly across from the couch. which sucks.

so here are some snaps of the room layout....(google sketch...a first for me)

tv is a 46 samsung lcd.

etc..
doorway on the left is a hallway......opening on the right is to the kitchen of matching size to this room. stairs with railing back right corner...back left is the front door entryway.

ask any other questions.

(ps. thinking of going with the sbs-01 w/ pb12-nsd...for a size reference)

thanks
matt

You need some room dimensions and the total foot cubic volume of the sound room and any adjacent rooms that are open to it (i.e. such as the kitchen). The cubic foot volume helps determine the size of the subwoofer while the dimensions allow placement of the speakers, TV and couch within the room. I would make an attempt at speaker and couch placement on your sketch yourself. Then you should contact SVS for their recommendations and fax them your particular setup. Their site lists a point of contact. They won’t try to sell you more than you need and it is their equipment you are considering buying (which sounds like a good idea to me).

Are you saying you don’t see a way to fit the couch in the listening area because of the doorway and arch on the room sides? If so you may wish to place the couch along the long left side and get a big overstuffed recliner for the right side wall. Is there no back wall? If so, it looks like you can fit in side 5.1 surrounds but back wall speakers for 7.1 might be out of the question. You might be a candidate for room acoustic treatments sometime down the road.

Don't put your TV over the fireplace. If you could take the fireplace out , that would acoustically be the best location. That is not the most hopeful HT room. Do you have another room in the house that would be more suitable, a basement perhaps?

That IS a tough one. Other than diagonal placement -- with the TV in the far left corner -- I can't see a way to do it, unless you did take the fireplace out. Another room might be the answer. Good luck!

thanks to all for all of the input.

the room ...total size is....

22'6'' (fireplace to back wall)
12'9'' (from left to right wall)
8' ceiling

2295 cubic feet

adjoining kitchen....right wall opening....is the same size 2295 cubic feet

Speaker Level adjustment shoud compensate.

You room is fairly long at 22.6 feet. You should be able to receive the sound fine after level calibration. I would asthetically , as possible, place the speakers then adjust the sound levels, first automatically with a microphone and then with your own ear preference or with an SLM.

You need to figure out where you are cofortable with your sub and adjust the levels accordingly.

Have you determined what speakers you will be using? What is your speaker budget?

i'm thinking about the sbs-01's and the pb12-nsd.

my concern, as noted in the title, is placement of the equipment.

thanks.

Understand you were talking about placement, but...

i'm thinking about the cand the pb12-nsd.

my concern, as noted in the title, is placement of the equipment.

thanks.
That it the reason I asked, because those speakers are too small for that size room. You need to think about some larger MTS-01 tower speakers to sound good in a room 22.6 feet long. The subwoofer will work depending on the placement.

YMMV,

does it matter that the viewing distance to the tv (because it's in a corner...and the couch is off of the back wall and angled in) is only 9-10 ft?!?!

didn't know if that would matter?!?!
thanks

10' from a 46" is just fine. I sit 11' from a 92" screen and it could be bigger.

..and I sit 7 feet from a 32" and................well you know where this is going ;)

I think the options presented may be your only ones and then you still have the precise speaker placement work to do but it's better than having no HT at all; right :)

Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.
