PS3 DTS-HD Master Audio

Ok, question?!?!

When this update comes through the PS3 next week.... will it pass the DTS HD or will it do it internally? Does anyone know?

I guess I am asking if the DTS HD symbol will show on my Denon 3808. I have played several discs with Dolby TrueHD and it does not show the TrueHD symbol on my Receiver like my Toshiba HD DVD player A35 used too.

Also, b4 the last firmware update (mid/late march) my Dolby TrueHD on my Denon Receiver would read Multi Channel when playing the Dolby TrueHD audio track, now after the firmware update it shows Dolby Digital (not Dolby Digital TrueHD but Dolby Digital)... not as mutli channel, has anyone seen this? I am wondering if it is suppose to be reading Dolby True HD soundtrack on my Receiver and something is being sent wrong.

Let me know if anyone can answer any of these questions.

Pretty sure on this though, the PS3 will convert TrueHD and DTS-MA to PCM bitstreams and send them out that way. You will want to go into the audio settings of the PS3 and check every box basically and then let it do it's thing.

If the PS3's audio has been reset, you won't get the HD audio flavors you are looking for, so make sure to manually go in and check. The PS3 may not properly automatically ID your audio system to HD audio.

The hardware in the PS3 is not capable of bitstreaming the new audio codecs, so it will do with dts-hd ma what it currently does with TrueHD, and that is decode it internally inside the PS3 and output it as PCM to your receiver.

Just to make sure people are aware of this, whenever you're watching any 1.1 features the audio has to be mixed in the player, so you can't bitstream and enjoy true PIP features utilizing lossless audio.

I think Sony have always been looking towards internal decoding for all lossless sources because of this.

I'm sure the PS3 will do just as good a job with dts-ma and dts-hr as it does with Dolby TrueHD.

If you're seeing Dolby on your receiver when watching TrueHD discs and using the PS3, you have it set to bitstream and you're only getting the lossy Dolby track.

I did not think that I would be able to tell the difference at all or it would be minor, I was wrong. I was watching (and do not make fun) Enchanted and I watched the scene in the park where they sing the song with the steel drums.

Now with this movie you can change the audio setting quickly like one second... well I kept playing with it during that scene... and WOW.

When I turned it on the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, it was so well defined, the base boomed with tight accuracy, and the sound from the speakers appeared louder (or more clear). In Dolby track, the base did not boom as much and the bass seemed shorter and kinda muddy... quick rathering than holding the sound, I hope you understand. Overall in Dolby the speakers seemed to get quiter (or not at clear).

If you get a chance, just change the soundtracks and watch the same scene over and over in Dolby versus Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, there is a difference, WOW!

Welcome to the club! In 2006/2007 there were so many people posting in places with 360 add-ons saying crap like "you need $10,000 systems to appreciate the difference" or "most people won't notice any difference, lossless can't be appreciated by most people".

Well, you for one now know the difference. Watching a movie with lossless audio is night and day over DVD-Video audio quality. It's such a great upgrade.

If I understand correctly, unless and until you have the firmware update to profile 2.0 (not sure if it is available yet), the PS3 cannot bitstream the HD sound but if you set it to PCM over HDMI to your 3808 then you do. So what is the issue with setting it to PCM?

The PS3 can't bitstream the new HD audio codects, it has to decode it internally to PCM. Only use bitstream on the PS3 if you have digital optical connected, otherwise if you use digital optical and set it to PCM, you will only get 2 channel audio. Connect the PS3 to your receiver via HDMI and set it to PCM and automatic detection.

Bear in mind that according to Sony, the new update only affects DTS HS MA, supposedly DTS-ES is still not supported for BD nor is it or DTS96/24 for regular dvd. I'm not sure how those will play, as I haven't yet tried them.

I will try it in my PS3, then I'll try it in my HD-A2 and see what happens, maybe the PS3 not supporting those formats will be enough reason for me not to get rid of my HD DVD player. However, If you use a digital optical cable, and chose bitstream, your receiver should be able to decode those formats, so I guess if you use your PS3 with an HDMI cable, you won't get those formats. So since my HD-A2 will bitstream out anything that's not TrueHD or Dolby Digital +, I should have no problems with DTS-ES or DTS 96/24.

Pan, I totally agree so much I have to learn.

But it is interesting to me that the PS3 so far has lived up to its name, meaning that it is so upgradeable. Hope the upgrades keep coming! I do love my PS3 and feel that this is and was a GREAT purchase! I am a Sony Lover though so I am bias!

I turn on my TV, receiver and PS3 and when I run the test, it only detects 2-ch PCM modes (default).

It should do, dts is compatible with bitstream on the PS3 via optical and HDMI.

dts-hd master audio and dts-hd high resolution are NOT compatible with bitstream. You will merely get the dts core contained within. If you want the full lossless dts-hd ma stream the PS3 must be set to PCM across HDMI.

I was under the impression that it cannot decode/bitstream DTS-ES or DTS 96/24 period.
