HELP! Internet/OE link continual loss.

I have started losing my internet and Outlook Express links to my computers multiple times per day (4 or 5). It's driving me nutsoid, and I'd sure appreciate one of you computer/network wizards giving me a hand.

We use DSL (Embarq) and an Embarq 660 modem, an Airlink 101 four port wired router, two computers, and a color HP printer connected in the LAN at the router.

The only software change that preceded this problem I doubt caused the issue. (I added a Symantec bug fix for a huge NAV resources hog exe program.) The system now drops off several times a day...when apparently the modem loses sync with the router or computers. The modem is somewhat hot when I handle it. Is that normal? The fix is to power down all devices and repower from modem->router->computer. THEN...4 hours later repeat...just for giggles.

Help...PLEASE! This is driving me battier than I already am.:confused::mad:

Hi Tomorrow, I had the same problem a few years ago.
Once it was the modem.(cable company replaced it)
The second time, my router needed a software update.
Don't know if this will help in your case.
Good Luck

Hey RJ,

I went the same way as Rick, I replaced my old router with a new one, Bellsouth (back then) patched my DSL modem and I've had no more problems since, usually now when my 'puter loads slowly it's usually service oriented not hardware.

I reached Embarq just now. They said that our area is experiencing outages as a result of over-subscription to the DSL service and thus their system keeps kicking people off. (But they're working on it. Uh huh.) The rep also said the modem shouldn't be really hot (ours is), so they're sending a new modem. Oh yeah, they hope to have the service fixed by May!

I hope this is the real villian. We'll see. I don't trust low-level service reps to know much about anything. :(

I'm not sure if the tech is correct. All of the DSL modems I have had run VERY hot. I have always been careful to give them enough breathing room. I would not turn down a new modem but I would bet it gets almost as warm.

I just touched my Westell DSL modem, it's slightly warm, this thing is constantly on.

I had the same problem about a year ago. I replaced my router, double checked everything, had SBC out for a service call, no improvement. Finally I "forced" them to send me a new modem, end of problem.

As far as their other problem, want to bet whether they are still selling subscriptions to their over subscribed service.
