So does this mean that I wouldn't necessarily need to upgrade my receiver to take advantage of the new audio codecs from BD? I'm a little confused for some reason on this whole thing, My current receiver has multi channel inputs. This is kind of an offshoot of another thread asking which I should get first. If this is true I can definitely put off getting a new receiver and just send everything out through PCM. Thanks for everyones patience with my slowness to understand this whole thing.

If your receiver has an HDMI input that's ver. 1.1 or higher, you have what you need. The PS3 internally decodes TrueHD, and soon DTS-HD MA, and outputs it as PCM so your receiver doesn't have to do the decoding. The PS3 has no analog outputs, so if your receiver doesn't have HDMI, you would need a new receiver, or a blu ray player that has analog outputs to take advantage of the new audio formats.

Cool, thanks for the quick response. My receiver doesn't have HDMI, but I think I'm going with the PS3 first anyways and I'll just save up for a couple more months to get the receiver then. I don't even know why I'm making a big deal out of this anyways, I only have a 3.1 setup right now (as per wife and wires everywhere ) Thanks again.

does this cover old ps3's like my 60gb?

(i see no mention of model specific stuff, so i guess it covers all the models and is only software related)

I salute the Sony PS3 and declare that it is the ultimate entertainment system!:D

Truly amazing how you can just download a firmware to the PS3 to get DTS-MA when every other company has to change out the hardware completely!!!

Sony PS3, I'm not worthy!:D:D

I don't see why it wouldn't cover all versions of the PS3.

I agree. I may have to get a second one for my bedroom system once it's complete. It would be the best option in a blu ray player for me since it has wi-fi, I can download firmware updates without having to drag out a lan cable, or copying it to and from a flash drive, plus the bluetooth remote means I don't have to have a direct line of sight with the system, and it would allow me to stream all the music from both my pc's wirelessly, so I wouldn't have to mess with playing cd's or ripping/copying music to it's hard drive.

The only possible downfall I can find with the PS3 is that it's hardware isn't capable of bitstreaming truehd or dts-hd ma, but that's not a big deal since they should sound the same as pcm. But with pcm you keep all the secondary audio streams for things like picture in picture.

I am glad they finally got their head out of their bum and actually did something for us Blu-ray users. Now that they have everything I want for the PS3 I can comfortably chose an appropriate AVR when I need to. Something like the Marantz SR-4001 or Yamaha RX-V661 for cheap would be great options for me.

Best thing since sliced bread? I wouldn't go quite that far. Sure, it's a great Blu-ray player, but the PS 3 is FAR from perfect. I had to buy a new TV because it won't upscale 720p games to 1080i and my old RPTV only did 480/1080.

Plus, I finally got around to putting music on the hard drive, and you can't organize your music into folders the way I had it on my PC. The PS 3 just dumps everything on the hard drive based on titles. The only way you can organize your music is to create playlists. Totally lame.

But I am happy that we'll finally be getting DTS-MA.

I don't think you can scale from progressive to interlaced.

I use an external drive to store music which then allows you to store in folders, though you still can't sort by track number. On the PS3, you can sort by artist and album.

The only thing the PS3 is missing now is an IR receiver so it can be integrated with universal remotes. I'd also like them to put back in a chip for SACD decoding, but that may not matter if the BDA gets BD Profile 3.0 in order--it apparently is only a set of software specifications.

This makes me even more happy about my recent PS3 purchase! I really do love the thing and am getting used to using the sixaxis to control the BR player.
I cannot believe Sony is actually serving the best interest of the customer in this instance:confused: Maybe the update will contain a rootkit or something;):D

The PS3 need a FAQ sticked somewhere on this site.
Its the most obvious choice for the best cheapest blu-ray player despite what some of the AV snobs think.

This should solve the remote issue.

So let me get this straight. PS3 owners don't have to have the latest/greatest Receiver to listen to that codec; rather the PS3 does the decoding?

So if I'm in the market for a receiver, just look for one with the inputs/outputs (HDMI) I need, but it doesn't need to be the best?

Correct, you just need a receiver that has HDMI 1.1 or better, and one that is an HDMI repeater, not a switcher, as the switching ones don't handle audio via HDMI.
