so im getting the yamaha 663 receiver and now i need to buy new speakers! i was thinkin im just gonna buy the three fronts right now, and hold off on the surrounds, just using some dinky sony speakers i have as surrounds for now. i need them for movies, but also rap country and rock music, oh and i need a new sub also. what do yall suggest for my music preference in the 1500 price range? i auditioned b&ws and did NOT like them...they were too mild, very smooth, but boring. what about polk rti a7s, paradigm studio 60s, are there any others i should go look at in b&m stores in this price range? i listened to klipsch rf62's and they werent bad, may go have a look at the rf82's. any other suggestions? ps my young ears did not enjoy the b&ws cuz they were TOO smooth and boring, i need something a little more exciting...help! haha

Is that $1,500 for fronts, center and sub? Which B&W did you listen to 600, 700 or 800 series? I understand there is a big difference.

If you can be specific about what you did and didn't like about the speakers you heard, it will be a lot easier for people to make suggestions.

There are lots of good brands out there, both B&M and ID.

yes that is correct on that price...i may be able to bump it up to 1800ish or 2000 for a real stretch. I listened to the 600 series and the midrange was great, but i felt as if both the high and low ends were lacking and a little boring. the speakers sounded very smooth, just almost real quiet, especially since i a/b'd them with klipsch rf62s. you know the sound that klipsch is known for, they exaggerate the lows and highs but the mids on the klipsch werent great...and the highs were a little too profound. i need something between these two as far as sound goes. the tweeters on teh klipsch were a little too much..the bass was pretty good, and the vocals and mids were not what i had hoped either. I know there are a lot of b&m and ID brands, but im just looking b&m right now cuz i prefer to hear the speakers i buy beforehand, i may reach into ID if i cannot find somehting i like in my pricerange in stores. You know the smiley face EQ that a lot of young listeners tend to be drawn towards? too much lows and highs and not enough mids? well im kinda drawn to that, which is why i didnt like the b&w's, but the klipsch were TOO much like this..i need something between these two speakers.

Looked at the Emotiva stuff yet? They have gotten favorable reviews so far. and I believe you could get an entire 5.2 near to your stated budget. Not to mention the Cool factor of the seperate sub amp..

I my neck of the woods, Studio 60s are around $2,000. I really liked the studio 40s and 60s when I listened to them.

Having been able to audition the Axiom M80s at the factory I can confidently say that for quite a bit less I will be getting a much better speaker.

For B&M how about... dang, who are the guys who make the T45 and T55 tower??

Out of curiosity, why are you against ID? On your budget, I think its going to be hard to get the sound you want.

Take a look at Audioadvisor. Right now they have the Athena speakers on sale. Athena is made by the same company that makes Energy speakers. The athena brand is being phased out. Right now you can get terrific deals on the closeouts.

Also on Audioadvisor, take a look at their Energy RC offerings. The Energy RC is one step down from the their top of the line Veritas line. Many people have heard the RC line, and they are impressed. The RC-10 bookshelves right now cost about $300 a pair, and the RC-30 small floorstander costs about $600 a pair. In my opinion, the RC-30 is a STEAL at $600, that's 50% off the original price.

2 Energy RC-30 for the mains, 2 RC-10's for the rears, that's less than $1000 for 2 pairs of Energy speakers, what more can you ask for.

If you want to take a look at the Polks, I would suggest the newer Polk RTi series, much better than their lower end Monitor series. The newer Polk DSW series subs is also very good.

Just noticed the matching Energy RC center is quite expensive. In that case, just use a single RC-10 or a single RC-30 as the center.

Congratulations! That's the billionth time you've posted that, and STILL no one cares.

To the OP,

If you want to stay B&M, Energy and PSB make speakers that would fit between the B&W 600s and Klipsch.

The Energy RC line has some nice offerings, and for rears I would suggest the RC Mini, as they're cheaper, and smaller. I would rather have RC 10s, the RC LCR and the Mini for rears (dislike towers).

What size is your room? I would recommend a Subwoofer from an ID brand, as you buck will go farther.

i wanted to steer clear from ID towers because i REALLY want to hear them first...and yes i like more forward highs, but not TOO forward, as i stated the klipsch were a little too forward on the highs and lacking in the mids and lows, but maybe the rf82's would be better than the 62s on this...anyways, i liked the advice that energy and psb are between the b&ws and klipsch..this is the kind of suggestion ive been looking for..ill add these to my list of ones to audition..any particular model you would recommend? i think right now my next list of ones to seek out and audition are polk rtia7's, paradigm studio 40's, and 60's, PSB?, ENERGY?, Klipsch rf82's...does anybody think that any of these options DOES NOT belong in the category between b&w 600s and the klipsch rf62s? or can anybody add to that list? thanks for all the help guys i really appreciate it.

PSB Image T45s towers and C40 center. Save up for the sub for next year's purchase. Stretch the purchase out over a few years if possible and this will elminate having to replace speakers at a later date because you couldn't afford waht you really wanted in the 1st place that one time.

The PSB's that 3db sugggest would be a good one to add to your list, consider the T55s as well if you're able to demo both.

I'd considered the T55s at one point prior to purchasing my VR3s, PSB offers a quality build with very good performance at their price point... -TD

IMO Axiom would be a better recommendation.
I agree with that, but as the OP doesn't want ID, Axioms are out. Too bad really as Axioms or Aperions would probably fit the bill. Take a look around at RBH, Mordaunt-Short, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, and maybe Infinity. I'd also check out PSB and Monitor Audio just to be sure.

If you like the energetic sound you should check out the new paradigm monitor series. I listened to the monitor 9's, I believe, next to the klipsch rf-82's. Believe it or not to my ears the monitor 9's sounded more alive than the klipsch's did. They seemed to have alot more impact in the mid-range and even their upper range, which suprised me.

Not trying to hijack the thread or anything but if the budget was about $1000-1200 for fronts, center and surround (minus the sub), what would experienced people recommend. I will also be driving them with a Yammy 663.
