Recommendations for low cost, high value speaker stands

what are some good stores or ID companies that sell stands, i do not want to spend over $120 for a pair and if possible much much less

SVS has 31" tall basic black stands for $54.95pr. which I think may be on the lower end of the price range. This question was asked recently and there were a couple of really nice metal double-bar stands listed, but there were no prices and I suspect they cost a lot more.

I recommend buying steel stands rather than mdf or particle board models, as they tend to be sturdier and hold up better over the years.

If you want them to look nice, always make sure you don't buy a model with a top plate larger than the bottom of your speaker. That is why I did not buy the model at the top of this link, and purchased some now discontinued "medium mass" stands from them. They are quite sturdy and well made. But I would not use the spikes on the top plate, and recommend instead that you use a thin rubber mat to protect the bottom of your speakers.

I just got some small tables (marble top) for $10 each. they have a cherry finish and so have great WAF. put dense foam mat under speaker and spike on the bottom. They were for my son's room and they seem to function well. There store had a bunch of them left over from X-mas stock.

I've owned these before. For store bought stands they are without a doubt the strongest, heaviest most sturdy stands I've ever dealt with. Much bigger or stronger than this and you're into Studio type gear, which is really unncessary for our purposes. Good price too. Also, Guitar Center is allowed to haggle on price. You might be able to walk away with them for around $99.

Why not make your own?

I have searched high and low for quality speaker stands and found most to be ugly and flimsy. The attractive and high-quality ones cost way too much. So frustrated I decided to make my own. It turned out to be easier and cheaper than I had thought. If I can do it, anybody can do it. Here are the Ironman speaker stands I made.

Unfortunately, I think Parts Express discontiued the medium mass stands that were their best value. I got 3 pairs for $55 each and they were about 20lbs each unfilled. I use the PE high mass stands (240-744 mentioned above by Pyrrho) and I recommend them (26lbs each unfilled). Those Guitar Center ones look pretty decent too; I may have to drop by and check them out.

Many speaker stands are fillable. Clean sand (or better yet, lead shot from your local gun store) can add a lot of stability.

If you want to look for a B&M store for some, I found a good pair of Plateau metal speaker stands for about $60 a pair at ABC Warehouse. They come in 2 different heights, can't remember the other one but I have 30" stands. They are very heavy, made out of solid metal that is about 1/8" thick or so and are very sturdy and easy to put together. Hope this helps.

Many speaker stands are fillable. Clean sand (or better yet, lead shot from your local gun store) can add a lot of stability.

Lead isn't exactly a good thing to have sitting around your house. BBs are also very easy and inexpensive to get and can also help. Sand is good, but can be difficult to work with.

How tall do you need your stand to be? It's best to elevate the speakers so the tweeters are at ear level.

If you don't need anything taller than 24", then the Parts Express Dayton 24" high mass stands is a bargain at just slightly over $100.

If you need something taller, then Penny's recommendation for the Guitar Center stands look very attractive.

It's tough to find good sturdy stands that don't cost an arm and a leg. If you have the tools and are into DIY, then definitely go to Home Depot and buy the parts and build your own stands, MUCH cheaper this way.
