That VHS is not a good analogy. It is low def, why would anyone buy low def when DVD is here
While HD is gone, the players are not, they are cheap now, or if you already have one, it should still work, and the video resolution is the same as BR.
But, if you don't have such a player, then it would not be worth it just for one such good deal. Or, if there is no room left for such a player.

I am set to buy this, but apparently there two versions of this series. The one they have on sale is narrated by Sigourney Weaver. The original version was narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Does anyone know what the difference is? Thanks.

There has been some argument/confusion about the video resolution between the British and the American versions. Some people say only the British version has 1080p while the American version is 1080i. Some other people think they are both 1080i. Anyway, I just paid $25 + $3 for shipping for the American version today.

There seems to be a lot of people that have received defective HD-DVDs of this. My first set had the 1st 3 discs jumping back, pixeling and tearing. The 4th disc was flawless. They replace it but the second set has the same issues exactly. this time I had to ship it back, my expense, to get a replacement. Still waiting although it is probably withing the shipping time frame so far.

You should check the discs soon after it arrives. I made the mistake to wait until I was ready to watch it. Big mistake.

Got it two days ago. Watched 3 discs already. So far there is no problem. Don't really care for Sigourney's narration though. I just learned that the PBS store has the BBC version for $21 after discount. This is the version to get. I don't think I can return it. Oh, well.

They're running fine in my EP30.

I see a lot of you folks here on Audioholics buying DVD-A's and SACD's. No Blu-Ray standalones play SACD's. Only one plays DVD-A's. I take it you don't buy SACD's or DVD-A's anymore, either? BTW, LG and Samsung both make units that play CD's (something a couple of early Blu-Ray players forgot about), DVD's, HD DVD's and Blu-Ray's.

Back on topic... the $25 is for the crappy Discovery Planet Earth. I prefer Sigourney's narration, but everyone says this set looks like crap. I'm glad I got the BBC version last year before the Discovery version even became available. I may take Discovery up on their "Sunrise Earth" offer. $25 for a box set is always a good deal. I snagged my "Nip/Tuck: S4" off Flea-bay for $17. You can't even get a used copy of the SD DVD for that cheap.

Fry's has the BBC version for $40, which isn't bad. The Discovery version is a ripoff at any price. I wish people pay more attention to the details before posting deals.

Thanks for the heads up Nomo, just ordered a copy for myself and my folks (I got them a HD-DVD player and Bluray player two years ago. I know my folks will really love this series.
