Audyssey Mic Cable Not Long Enough!

I calibrated the Onkyo 905 manually when I first installed it a few weeks ago. I finally had the house to myself last night while the CFO was out with some friends and decided it was a perfect opportunity for silence ;)

So, I gathered my tripod and the Audessey MultiEQ XT mic and cleared the room of any clutter. When I unwound the mic and went to place it on the tripod, I discovered that it's short.

I have a 3.5mm extension that is 25'+ but, I'm wondering if this will cause problems with the Audessey readings?

One other issue is my tripod. It's about a foot taller than ear height when the legs are fully compacted. I can remove the cushion for the seating postion being measured but, would that throw off the reading?

The mic should be where your head is for accurate readings. Maybe you can buy or borrow a boom to fit on the tripod to get the mic where you need it.

I'd think a standard extension would be fine for the mic cable.

I have got a tripod but I don't use if for autocalibration. I just sit at the listening position, puy the mic on top of my head, hit the remote buttons and sit still for a couple of minutes. I figure having a person in the measurement is more accurate than a tripod. There is only about a 6 inch difference between ear height and top of head height which is negligible.

Thought about Onkyo 905 but....

heard about heat problems so I got a Marantz 8002 instead :D However, the Onkyo 905 is awesome :) ; how do you like it ?

Sounds like a nice AVR room and the extension of the Audissey microphone shouldn't have any effect.

Thank you all.

I really like the Onkyo 905 so far. It seems to pair well with the PSB speakers. This is my first dedicated HT system and so far, I'm extremely happy with the choices I've made. Pink Floyd has never sounded so good :) and movie soundtracks are so much more revealing. BTW, the PSB 6i sub is pretty awesome as well. Very flexible for music and movies, never muddy or distorted. Plus, it offers more bass than the CFO can handle...

I was already expecting heat buildup from the PS3 once I planned to move the electronics into the closet. So, the additional heat from the receiver was a non-issue. From the outset I had planned to vent the closet but, I'm just now getting around to it. You can see the solution I'm working on here:

Thus far, the fans inside the 905 have only come on once that I'm aware of. While it is hot, it seems to have no effect on the performance/reproduction quality of audio or video. The additional features like HD Radio and networking capabilities are very cool.

My main concern with using the extension cable, especially given its length, was a potential issue with signal timing. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem though.

Haha that is great.:D:D I take it you don't have the 8 position calculation. A buz cut and a little velcro and I am my own tripod.

Yea, you got the idea, be your own tripod! I knew it would get a few chuckles at my expense, but why should a non-camera person go out and buy a tripod if you don/t have to especially for one or two uses.

I have got about a three year old Yamaha receiver with YAPO and I have calibrated it twice, but I don’t remember doing much but starting it. The microphone looks like a chess pawn and its about an inch and a half tall with a broad base so it sits on your head easily (unless you have a pointy head). No need for Velcro for me. Actually I am bald on top so no buzzcut. Hair might actually help hold it in place better.

Actually the first time I dug out my tripod and did it conventionally. The second time I was too lazy to dig the tripod out so I came up with "be your own tripod”. Kinda funny if you picture it but it does work well and could save a few people some bucks.
