What have you stopped listening to?

I'm pretty sure it's Mary Ellen...

But regardless, classic rock never dies. Sure, I get tired of certain things...anytime The Who or Led Zep comes on I hit 'next', but I still want it as part of my collection, it's just that I often don't feel like hearing it for the two millionth time. Other times, I just let it go. It's the beauty of random play across the entire collection. Naturally, I also choose certain songs from time to time rather than wait till they come on randomly.

On a side note, I think WinAmp's random play implementation is flawed. It appears that it chooses an artist at radom and then a song from that artist. So in my case bands for which I have a large number of songs play often. It picks The Who and Journey quite often because I have at least 40 songs from each.

100% sure it's Maryanne, reason: I was dating a Maryanne at the time and my wife was born in Boston, so the song is etched in my grey matter! MediaMonkey has worked out fine in that respect. I ripped the Damned Yankees anyway just to have it in storage and I bit my lip and ripped Boston too, you guys have made me feel guilty about not being nice to my music collection, now all is getting ripped.

I'm sure there is a few others, but I've moved twords Techo/Trance, Sonic Youth, Diana Krall, some others.

I honestly only really liked his old stuff.

You won't believe the headaches that song caused after Maryanne ceased to be the cave-girlfriend, that was ugly. Crank calls at 3:00 am, with the song playing in the background, oh crap I'm going to have flashback/nightmares tonight, thanks M!

I have a couple boxes of old cd's in a closet. A few years ago I pulled out a box and right on top was a few old King Diamond albums. I said to myself, "cool, I haven't listened to King Diamond in years. I used to play the cr*p out this," and proceeded to put it my cd player.

As it started playing I said aloud, "WTF is this," while the whiney, shrill, and piercing operatic metal arias tore through my ear canals. I kept thinking it must have been the next song I really liked. But they just kept getting worse.

I couldn't figure it out. Then I realized I must have grabbed the wrong album, of course, it was the other one I used to love. I took out the offensive recording and in its place I put it my beloved album. To my surprise it was even worse than the first.

I rarely listen to my old music anymore. Just because I loved it in high-school and thought it would change the world with its thought provoking and rebellious ways, doesn't mean that now it's not best left forgotten in a box. For the rest of the music in that box I'd rather leave it undisturbed than to open it and forever ruin my fond memories of recieving aural pleasure.

I can't say I've stopped listening to a particular genre, but there are some cds I haven't heard in years, there's this one that comes to mind, "Latin Alliance" by Latin Alliance. I used to listen to this one song "Lowrider" but haven't touched that cd in more than 10 years I guess. What I do now is browse through the Youtube website and look for older videos, especially of the 80's, that brings back a lot of memories.

Thats the way I feel about early nineties music. You must be about ten years younger than me.

I do believe Stratman is right about Maryanne. As far as the Doobies I can listen to Black water anytime anywhere. What a great song. That album was in the eight-track player in my 72 Camaro for a longgggg time.

I won’t listen to the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elton John, Billy Joel, Springsteen, Phil Collins, The Police, Sting, and a lot others that have been played to death over the years.

Absolutely agree!
That's the reason I can't listen to FM anymore.
Except for the two college stations I listen to.
They both play stuff you rarely here on the radio.

I opted to just save the songs I liked; so when we have friends over, I just put it on shuffle, and
I like every song that's played. (really omitted only a song or two from each CD.)

Sorry for late reply. I had lost track of this thread. I do the same thing, there are a few CDs that get ripped in their entirety, most the best material only. Joe Sample, Sade, Steely Dan, Donald Fagen, Gato Barbieri, Cal Tjader, Victor Feldman, Ronnie Cuber, Coltrane, Parker, Joe Pass, Mingus, Miles are some of the ones that I can remember right now that have been ripped entirely I know I've got more, I'm still not done, but man it takes work!

Good thing she cannot see the monitor. Now, if what she was saying was in fact interesting or had any relevance to any particular project I'm working on I may not be typing this. But at least I look busy for the moment, except that I had to remove my headphones (Barry McGuire's Eve of Destruction was playing).

Strat, Rickster, I've been ripping most of my cds to my hard drives in my pc, and have actually moved to "ripping" my old vinyl. Obviously the vinyl is much more time-consuming. But I have been ripping complete cds/vinyl for a couple reasons. First, disk space is relatively cheap, so why not. Secondly, on a whim I want to hear a deep cut, or find my tastes changing, (something I've actually noticed quite a bit while listening to older sources) - what I often skipped without much of a thought, now sounds fresh again. Plus, there are times where I still really like listening to complete albums. Add that to the fact I have ftp server code running on my pc and i can even grab a song or album while at work or on vacation with ease.

Neat, I'm also running a dedicated PC server with RAID and 1 Terabyte of storage (2x500 GBs), funny there are songs that I just can't listen to anymore, but I ripped them for posterity and at the urging of some fellow audioholics, who knows I might like them again and they're within easy reach.
