Im about to set up my first system. I got the new Yamaha Rx-v663 and here is what i have to hook up to it. I have my PS3 ( via HDMI), Toshiba HD DVD ( via HDMI) and my comcast HD DVR box ( via HDMI) Since my receiver has only 2 hdmi hook ups and comcast is only 1080i is there another way to hook it up without HDMI and same quailty? Digital Audio Optical and something else?

You can buy an HDMI switcher and run everything through you receiver to get the latest sound, then on to the TV to get the latest picture quality, I bought a 4-position HDMI switcher from monoprice.com for $43. If you don't want to do that, the next thing is to hook up one or more of your devices directly to TV HDMI inputs. You then run an optical toslink cable from your device to the receiver.

You can connect the dvr via component for video ,and digital optical for sound, since you only have 2 hdmi's(ps3&tosh)

Just hook the cable box directly to the TV and use optical to the reciever for sound. You don't want to have to turn your receiver on every time you watch TV anyway do you?

The 663 only has two HDMI inputs? I didn't realize that. Wow, that sucks.

So Im going to use the digital audio optical to from the HD DVR box to the reciever and then which cable should i use to go from dvr box to tv? HDMI or just componet? If i use HDMI i dont have to use to reciever for sound, but with componet i would have to use receiver all the time for sound?

I would just go HDMI directly to the TV. That way you get picture and sound with one cable.

If you go component to the TV, you can just use RCA cables to the TV for sound from the TV, then use an optical cable from the cable box to the receiver for when you want to watch TV in surround through your receiver.

so will i have any sound problems using optical audio cable going from dvr box to reciever? Im using HDMI to go from dvr box to tv, skipping the reciever, for video.

That setup will be fine.

FWIW, my TV doesn't have speakers. I use my receiver and surround sound for everything.
