Any clues to why the fan does not turn on? The unit does get hot.

Most likely it's because there is no cooling fan. It's pretty normal for recievers to get warm, its heat generated from the amplifier. The more you crank it, the hotter it'll get.

There is definatley a fan inside of the recevier, It is attached to a large heatsink of some sorts. Maybe

I have a HTR-5890 and I have never heard a cooling fan running. The unit is a couple of years old, it is not a current model, although you might have bought a new one.

I bought this one back in 2005 . The unit has not shut down on me ,Im just curious to know why that little fan is not working or if it is even wired in,but man you could use this thing to heat your home!

Mine doesn't seem to run hot, but I have it entirely open to the room as opposed to in a cabinet. I also don't have anything sitting on top.

If the unit is functioning properly, the fan will likely only come on if the temperature gets above a certain level, probably when the temperature gets close to what the designers deemed to be the top of the safe operating range for the power transistors.

in my old RX-V1600 you could go into the advanced setup and have the fan on all the time, or come on automatically... I let it run constantly since it had my dvd player on top of it and it ran warm anyway, but when I had it set to auto it never came on. However on my new RX-V1800 there is no fan inside that I know of, but it's a non issue for me since I'm not using it's internal amps anyway.

I have the same receiver and I can assure you there's no cooling fan. Mine sits in a very well ventilated area so heat has never been a concern (it does get warm though).

When I had this model the fan never came on either. The receiver never reached levels of heat that would necessitate it turning on. The idea is that the fan should only come on when A.) it's needed to protect the receiver from heat damage and B.) when it won't be audible. It won't likely be audible in the event that it would turn on because the sound system would be so loud you wouldn't hear it.

There may be variences in the HTR-5890 model, but I highly doubt it. I have owned, and taken appart this exact model, it most certainly had a fan. The fan is located to the left of two convection heatsinks (between the transformer and heatsinks). When the fan is activated it pulls any hot air off the power supply, pushes it through the heat sinks (non-transistor side), and up an air ramp out of the receiver.

It's unlikely, but possible your's was designed differently (a later or earlier installment of that model) but all the HTR-5890s I have seen have a fan in the described manor.

Don't take my word Seth, you're probably right, I know you're the one that takes everything apart:D. I've never seen o heard a fan. I tried to look inside and there something resembling a fan (I can't make it out) that's in the middle of a piece with the Yamaha logo on top and the heat sinks.

The Yamaha logo is on top of the Power supply, what you are looking at is the fan, it's vertically mounted. If you look at the other end of the heatsinks you will see an air ramp that allows the air to be easily pushed up and out of the receiver.:)

My RX-V2500 is in a cabinet and seemed too hot for me and the fan never came on so I went to the advanced setup and set it to run all the time also. Runs at a nice temp. now and I can't hear the fan unless I'm standing in front of it with no music playing.

jon321, I would turn it on full time and see what you think of the noise. When the 2500 was released the reviews complained about fan noise. Either they fixed it or the reviewers were being picky IMO.

How do you go about turning on the fan. The instruction booklet that came with the receiver does not explain the procedure.

Thank you

Hi jon321,

I looked up your manual and I don't see that you have the option to turn the fan on all the time.

Heres a link to the rx-v2500 manual. http://www.yamaha.ca/av/PDFs/Manuals/2004_receivers/RVX2500E.jsp
On page 81 it gives the instructions on fan settings. The RX-V series is the more adjustable line for custom installers. I doubt it corresponds but take a look and let us know what you find out.

Good luck,
SBF1
