Onkyo TX SR805 w/ Rock Band

Hello, I bought one of these a few months back and have been pretty darn impressed so far. I do have one pretty specific problem though and it has to do with my Xbox 360 when playing Rock Band. There is a huge lag on the mic when singing and I read that it can be caused by a slow sound processor. Could that be true for this model Onkyo? If not does anybody have any suggestions to try so I can still enjoy the 5.1 rock concert glory on my 65" DLP?

P.S. It does not lag when connected analog directly to my TV...

Audio lags the video because video processing is very complex and takes a lot more time than audio processing.

That receiver includes 'lip sync' adjustments which are meant to deal with that type of problem by delaying the audio a bit to keep it in sync with the video. Try increasing the delay and see if that helps.

That receiver is known to have some possible audio delay issues also. Check each input setting because they default to 40 ms delay and reset them to 0 this causes problems with lip sync on some TV’s specifically ctr based rear projectors. If that does not help try one of the direct modes which I believe bypasses the processing. Nice receiver hopefully this helps with the issue.

What about hooking the video directly to the TV and just let the Onkyo do the audio processing?

Nice! Thanks for the tips fellas...Is there any way to set the reciever to just pass through the video without processing it? I'm running the 360 at 720p and there really isn't a need for it to do this. The reason I am running my components through the reciever is because I have all of my equipment in a closet away from the theatre room with one video lead (DVI to HDMI) going TV and have a HTPC and the 360 I need to have connected to it. Thanks again for the help!

You mean MUTE the HDMI Audio and just use HDMI Video?

Or just use the HDMI Audio, and not use the HDMI Video?

Well, I am not actually using HDMI with the 360 since it wouldn't hold a picture when doing so. (Not quite sure why but it would look great for a min then go black and come back on over and over) I am using component for video at 720p on the 360 and optical cable for sound. From there I am using a HDMI to DVI back to HDMI to the TV.

component for video in to receiver and hdmi to TV the video gets processed. The max resolution passed that way is 720P. This is a limit in the video chipset as I understand it.

I would hook the 360's component directly to the TV for Video and Optical to the Onkyo for sound.

Ouch! This could be tricky because the nature of the house. I have these components in a clost off to the side of the theatre room and running another set of cables to the TV would be a disaster, but not impossible. Is there anyway to set the reciever to just pass the video through without actually processing it? Also, the 360 is a newer one with HDMI output on it. Would using this be beneficial at all or make matters worse? Thanks again guys and sorry for all of the repeat questions but I have to get it all squared away in my head so I know what to tackle next time I am down there since this is a vacation home...

I think if you send video signal to your receiver, the receiver will process the video signal and then send it out to your TV. I don't think you can bypass that.

But if you have HDMI, I would definitely use HDMI instead of Component & Optical.

Hey AcuDefTechGuy, I did try the HDMI connection with the 360 but the picture would come in beautifully for 30 sec or so then go black and come back on and repeat. Do you know what would cause this? I have a 50ft DVI (HDMI to DVI out of reciever to HDMI on mack of TV) could this be causing that problem?

I guess there is something going on with the HDMI-DVI part. Too bad your TV does not have HDMI. I doubt that it is the 50ft length that is causing the problem. I've had the same problem in the past when I was using a HDMI switcher box from Monoprice.com.

Going direct is the best (source to TV). Cut out the middle-man.

What kind of HDMI-to-DVI cable do you have? It might be low-quality or defective. I would buy from Blue Jeans Cable.

After that incidence with the HDMI switcher and some other cable issues with Monoprice, I will never buy anything else from Monoprice. I buy all my cables from Blue Jeans Cable now.

I wouldn't use Rock Band as a measure of audio/video sync. A lot of the graphics are not timed with the input of the microphone very well. I would have tried playing a movie on the xbox and then used the Onkyo adjustments to get the correct settings using the av sync setting which ranges from 0 to 250 milliseconds.

What is weird is I am running an HTPC which has DVI out on it. I have a DVI to HDMI cable going from HTPC to the reciever. From there I have HMDI to DVI adapter connected to 50ft DVI cable (chose DVI because it was MUCH cheaper at this length) with another DVI to HDMI adapter going into the HDMI input on the back of the TV (65" Mitsubishi Diamind series DLP). This setup works great when running HTPC! No lag, holds a beautiful picture, etc.

Its the microphone in rock band thats giving me the headache. Rock band seems to be okay for the rest of the instruments but the microphone audio is what lags. For instance, if I tap on the mic I hear it out of the speakers almost a full second later. Pretty much ruins the singing portion of the game...

Also noteworthy, I have a 50ft usb extension running back to the closet connected to the 360. I use this connection to connect all the instruments to the usb hub that came with the game in the front room below the TV. Not sure if this would cause that but as I said, the other instruments seem to play just fine...

Well if everything else is okay, it isn't your receiver, it might be that 50ft USB cable. I had heard the maximum length for a USB cable was about 16 ft.
