Power issues VSX-92TXH

Greetings! Newbie here. Great site and looks like a lot of people who are way more knowledgeable then me.
I just purchased the aforementioned Pioneer VSX-92TXH. I am in the process of installing it, with new plasma tv, bluray, ect. The issue is the receiver freezes, IF it even powers on. I am using standard outlets. I have not gotten everything hooked up yet but just a test prior revealed this. I was curious, is there a possibility of too much power being drawn from the outlet where its at and that it is not getting what it needs to operate? I, as some of you may see, am no electrician so I am just taking guesses. I was able to plug it in at a different outlet (with nothing at all hooked to it) and it appeared to operate properly but I have to let it sit before I plug it back in or it won't even come on. Aside from taking it back tomorrow (store being closed today for Easter) and watching them plug it in too see it working, anyone have any ideas? I also have a Panamax M5100-PM surge protector. The receiver acted the same way plugged in through that. Thanks in advance. -Richie.

If this happens with no speakers connected, then I'd go back to the store with it tomorrow. If there are speakers attached, you want to check for shorted speaker wires. The surge protector at best will be the same and at worst will make it worse.

Thanks for the reply. I did try with and w/out speakers and I am very careful about the wires and whats touching and know nothing is shorted. WHEN it does come on with speakers attached, it will play (tried through the tuner), but then after a brief period, the system will freeze again, with sound still coming out but you can not adjust anything. You cannot even power it off when it freezes, it has to be unplugged. I have already relegated myself to the idea I am returning it and have gone ahead and repackaged it. I can say this as a follow, I have owned many Pioneer products through the years and have always been very happy with their performance and longevity. I guess every now and then you can get a bad egg. Thanks again for the reply.

Well it sounds suspicious, that there may be a problem with that outlet, such as neutral gouging. If you are not familiar with electronics, then you will need an electrician to check it.

Now these modern receivers have a lot of complex microprocessor circuits. These circuits do need stable power.

I think these sophisticated HT systems are not adequately served by surge protectors. Now I know I have disagreement about this, but I stand by this advice. These new complex systems need an online UPS to drive them. Low voltage and glitches are just as serious as surges. America's grid is deteriorating fast along with the rest of our crumbling infra structure.

These units are cost effective. Pick one that has enough power, to power your system including the TV. You will still need to have your outlet checked and preferably have your electrician put it on a dedicated circuit.

But why would his unit play the radio but is unable to adjust anything short of unplugging? If the power is correct to play the radio, it should be correct for the processors, unless there is a glitch with the software.

How old is your house?
One way to check if your house power is at fault is to use a friend's house power. But, since you packed it already, take it back and make sure they play it as long as you did to see it freezes up.

The only reason I considered the outlet was the fact that it worked in a different outlet. The microprocessors would be much more sensitive to power problems than the radio. His problem is software lockup.

faulty receiver.

I returned the reciever. I exchanged it for a VSX-94TXH. This one works fine, no gliches of any kind. So it was not the outlet, it was in fact a bad unit. Thank you to everyone who offered input. Again, great site and keep up the great work.

Perhaps it had its issues there too? Yes, software lock up but that can be brought on by a number of other causes. Now, if it played flawlessly and consistently at the other plug, then yes, an outlet issue in the original location.

In any case the new one works there:D
