I have a 2 year old Wharfedale SW250 sub which I love but last month it just suddenly started making a humming noise. I've checked it out and it makes the noise whenever the power is on, even when no other cables are connected! I took it to the repair shop and they've told me it's irreparable and that the unit has a "complex signal processing fault". Surely there is something I can do to fix it? I'm guessing at least the driver is ok and all the front panel display still works......shouldn't I just be able to replace the damaged parts? Please help!

lol.....so you think I should just take it to another repair job and see what they say????
I don't know if the problem is that I'm in Australia and Wharfedale is in the UK...service out here for their products just seems very poor while in the UK it sounds like they have a good track record.....
Anywayz, just take it elsewhere?? The last place already had it for 5 weeks and then told me it couldn't be fixed!

I can't see that Wharfedale have any presence in Australia other than the holding company IAG. They have NO service arranged for Australia They have bought up a number of famous British Audio companies. They are a real load of Wallys. Here is your contact.

I bet they don't even have any circuits issued, which is probably why the service center could not fix it. You won't fix it without at least a circuit, and it likely needs a service manual. The way things are these days they likely have not published one.

You might have to take out the amp/crossover and sent it to the UK for service.

By the way on cruising round the Net, I got the distinct impression these units are known for problems.

I would start here.

Poor old Gilbert Briggs must be turning in his grave. Unfortunately we have the majority of the worlds companies now in the hands of VERY STUPID people.

Thanks guys.......

I actually sent an email to about 5 people at wharfedale and I got a decent response from one of them. I got my hands on a copy of the Service Manual for the SW250 and then I managed to find a place in lil old Adelaide, South Australia that could fix it! yay.....I love my sub! :) .....hope it doesn't happen again!

Glad to hear your story had a happy outcome.

I bet you were rescued by a dedicated employee of Wharfedale who has been part of the company long before the current clowns took over.

I've got no idea how long he's worked there but this legend named Rob Flain in the UK told me exactly what he suspected the problem to be and sent me the *.pdf copy of the entire service manual so I could show the repair shop. With all that they had no problem finding the sub fault and getting it fixed! :D
Rob saved me about $1000............cheers Rob and thanks TLS guy for making me try again to get in touch with the right people....
As for the wharfedale "clowns", what happened? is it IAG just running Wharfedale into the ground?

I know Rob Flain. He has been Quad service manager for years. Quad are also sadly owned by IAG. He was around under the ownership of Quad by the great Peter Walker. I have discussed Quad problems with him a time or two. He has taught me a lot. Rob Flain is a great guy who really knows his stuff. No wonder you got sorted out.

Sadly the Rob Flains are on the endangered species list. Condition critical. Fine firms get into the clutches of these soul less corporations, who are run invariably by rather stupid people.

This sounds like a bad filter cap in the power supply. If they can't find somehting as simple as that, they shouldn't be charging people to repair a toaster, never mind audio equipment.

If it's only 2 years old, contact Wharfedale and find out what they recommend.
