How many of you see Rainbows on DLP projectors?

It looks like I'm one of those unlucky people who see Rainbow flashes from DLP units. Since reading reviews of everything on Audioholics is a pastime of mine :p, I noticed that Clint DeBoer appears to see rainbows on certain units (Mits HC1500), but he also reviewed the Optoma HD70 and didn't make reference to rainbows. So I'm wondering, do only certain DLP projectors provoke rainbows more than others?

Also, can someone mention a few stores in the Toronto area where I can demo some DLP projectors side by side with LCD?

I have seen rainbow effect on almost every DLP display I've ever used. That was until I started using the projectors from my work...for. I don't recall the model, but they are all the same and they don't have this issue - they are not 1080p however.

I see rainbows on DLP projectors with a 5x speed or slower color wheel. At 6x speed I no longer can see them.

I find that certain manufacturers are worse for me than others. Mitsubishi is one of the worst to my eyes... I reviewed the new Marantz VP-15S1 DLP projector and it was truly the first time I could watch program material without really seeing rainbows. I could see them in test patterns, but not in most real-world viewing, even when darting my eyes.

Let me guess, there are no 6x DLPs in the sub $1500 720p range is there? :(

Unfortunately, the Marantz is a little out of my price range. And I'm really only looking for a 720p, since at my sitting distance, 720p and 1080p looks pretty much the same (ie 92" at 10 feet). Not really a fan of LCD and the convergence issues many of the 720p models are having.

It is my belief that as long as you use a single chip DLP unit with a segment color wheel despite speeds of the color wheel there will always be the risk of users seeing the rainbow effect namely in darker scenes or scenes heavily black or desaturated.

I have seen it personally even on 6x speed color wheels.
It was not an issue but I could still see in randomly.

I see them, too, on my Optoma HD72 (720p). The worst is when you have a bright, quick-moving object on a mostly dark background. I barely noticed it at first, then it got much worse and was really annoying. Now I see them frequently, but I guess I've gotten used to it because it doesn't really bother me much any more.

Cheers,

Kevin

My experience is kind of the opposite. I used to see them, especially in dark scenes on my Mits RPTV, but I don't notice them anymore. Maybe I've just gotten my brain accustomed to ignoring them which is why I don't notice them now.

I want to get the Mitsubishi HC1500 for $799 but I'm afraid of the rainbows since Clint makes mention of it in his reviews.

Can you guys recommend me some 5x-6x wheel DLPs in the $800-$1500 range? Not looking for 1080p. 720p will do.

I have never seen 'rainbows' on my DLP. It appears to be a problem for quite a few of you.

Add me to the list of those who see rainbows. However, on the Mitsubishi WDxx833 series tvs I only think I have seen rainbows once. Perhaps with those its the 6 segment color wheel that helps??

LCDs have convergence issues and panels fade over time.
DLPs have rainbows, and the color wheel can break.

It seems like choosing a projector is harder than doing this:

I've seen rainbow effect on certain movies ,I have a hc1500 and it's dependent on the source of the movie I guess .I correct the problem by switching the output of the DVD player to either 1080i or 720p and the problem is solved .

I never saw any rainbows when watching TV. Heck, I don't even know what it looks like. My mother has a 52" toshiba and I often watch my movies on it because it's 6" bigger than my LCD. So I've watched a lot of material in the past 3 years and never saw anything that bugged me other than the "film" material they use for the screen that makes the whites look grainy.

Huh? that's weird. I fail to see how resolution plays a part in this. Rainbows are noticable when a bright white object moves across a dark background - like headlights of a car, or a candle in a dark room, or the sunlight seeping into a dark area.

I have never seen rainbows on a rear projection DLP. I have a Mitsubishi HD1000 projector and I very rarely seen a rainbow in high contrast scenes. It doesn't bother me in the least.
