I have the following system.

Sony RDR-GX355 dvr

HDMI cable

Sony STR-DG710 connected to speakers

HDMI to DMI cable

Acer 22in Widescreen monitor (no speakers)

No audio out of the speakers.

When I turn off the monitor or unplug the monitor cable I get audio decoded and played by the STR-DG710.

I understand that I can't pass Audio on the HDMI to DVI cable but I don't understand why the cable/monitor kill the audio? I have tried both Amp settings on the Sony without success.

Any pointers?

You have one of these all to common HDMI HDCP compliance issues. HDMI is a two way street. Obviously the SONY is getting upset by the return verification HDCP codes. Unfortunately I think you will have to go with component video.

At times a different component order of turning them on have helped. Try your source first, then the others in different order and see what happens. It has helped others in the past.
