That DVD is recorded loud! I have to reduce my volume setting at least 12dB below my usual level to watch it.

After hearing people praise the Steely Dan 2AN concert, I rented it from Netflix and it's pretty amazing. I don't think I really even need the 2 MFW15 subwoofers I ordered but maybe when I get them I will appreciate a difference. Anyway I well definitely go buy this dvd. I think the weakest part of it is the guy on the distorted electric guitar (not Becker), I think he should have gotten the parts a little closer to the album versions.
Jon Harrington is the guy you're referring to. With Steely Dan material it's "almost" next to impossible to get it close to the recording in a live setting. SD always uses different guitarists in just one track, one guy will play rhythm, another lead and still another will dub solos. Actually Harrington is a highly regarded player in the New York music/recording scene, but I feel just like you do, it's nearly impossible to capture the core essence of their material, I've seen them live plenty of times, know their music by heart and yet after a concert I leave with a bit of an empty feeling, there are harmonics, nuances that are not heard/duplicated during a live show which are essential in the passage and clearly heard on the record. Green Earrings comes to mind, one of my favorite solos, no one has duplicated it note for note, harmonics included, outside the studio. So when it comes to SD live, I've learned to kick back and just enjoy the music.

PS Two Against Nature is a great DVD, it also sports DTS soundtrack, plus the picture quality is almost hi def in clarity, it was filmed in the Sony studio in NYC.

My senses watching and listening to DVD and Blu-ray discs are stroked or distressed by talent performance, production values, videography, sound engineering and disc duplication. Unfortunately, I have not viewed many discs that achieve the level of excellence that I so admire. To the contrary, for the effect I got from them, most could simply have been released on a CD rather than wasted on a DVD or Blu-ray disc.

However, one Blu-ray disc that I recently purchased captured those attributes that meet my criteria for overall excellence. It is Celine Dion: Live in Las Vegas - A New Day [Blu-ray."

This disc has a superb performance by its principal artist Celine Dion. She is supported with outstanding singers and dancers.

I found the production was creative and augmented by visually striking sets. Videography for the show is nuance-filled with intimate as well as full screen angles.

My HDMI cabling passed room-filling, clear and rich instrumentation via LCPM to my AVR and speakers.

Lastly, the innovative extra features on the disc provided a greater appreciation to the skill and expertise of the crew.

Lastly, my disc had no flaws of any kind to detract from my viewing and listening enjoyment.

This disc is the best overall Blu-ray concert disc that I have seen so far.

I feel the same way for the Celine Dion's "New Day" in Blu-ray. That one is in DD TrueHD.

Eagles DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO

I had some some rare spare time the other day and after re-dialing in my system I watched the HD-DVD of the Eagles Live From Melbourne Farewell 1 DTS-HD MASTER AUDIO track. I was just going to check out a track or two but ended up listening to the entire disk and several replays of select tracks. I'm not a big Eagles fan but this concert in DTS-HD audio is by far the best sounding DVD I have ever heard. Great performance by the Eagles and and just amazing sound.

How about either of the Celtic Woman DVD's? I love the music, but I wonder how well it was recorded / mixed to DVD. Any comments?

I have the one they performed at Slane Castle in Ireland. It's worth watching. I also enjoy Hayley Westena's concert in New Zealand and I remember the DVD is not that expensive. Check it out.

Recently borrowed "Relentless: The Concert" by Walter Trout - a$$-kicking blues guitar, I enjoyed it.

Here are three with a different twist by category:

Already named but giving another +1 vote
Led Zeppelin 2-disc set - Great sounding and nice span of concert footage from various places and from different times in their career. You get a good feeling of their evolution.

Not named and shock it hasn't been
Queen Rock Montreal (previously called Queen: We Will Rock You) - No idea how this could have been missed in the thread so far. The casual Queen or non-Queen fan would likely be shocked at how hard these quys rocked live. Lots of singers sound good in studio but very few can match Mercury's ability live.

Not named but not surprised
Scorpions Live at Waken - If you’re a fan of the Scorpions or 70s rock in general this is a must. No silly footage (i.e. constant cut outs, change of camera angle or artsy kaleidoscope) with an HONEST sound that gives you the feeling of what it would have been like to see them in concert. The set list is top notch with a great mix of some really old stuff along with newer. Also, this was sort of a reunion concert in that they brought out guys from some of the older lineups (i.e. Uli Jon Roth).

The two Eagles concerts are exceptionally good. I hope they release the Hell Freezes Over in Blu-Ray.
