This afternoon I was watching TV like normal when I heard a popping noise and the monitor went black. It is a 50 inch NEC monitor, anyone have any clue what the problem could be, this monitor was given as a present and im not sure if it has a warranty.

I am assuming it's an LCD? Power supply might have just died.

Does this monitor have a bulb in it like what a D.L.P t.v would? If so the "popping" noise could be the bulb going and if it is that they are easily replacable.

When you try to turn on your television do you get any flashing green or red lights on the front display where the power light would be??

Yes it has a red light that comes on for a moment and then the monitor turns off.

I do not know about the brand NEC but some brands when there are flashing red or green lights they are trouble shooting/diagnostics lights, i had a 50" sony t.v for a very brief moment (returned it and got a different t.v not from Sony :) and the screen would be totally black when you turn on the t.v all what would happen would be a flashing green light...in the end i found out it was a power supply issue....i remember reading in the manual when i did have the t.v for 2 days that a blinking flashing red indicates that the bulb/lamp needs replacing...one important question though does this television have a bulb/lamp? What type of television is it LCD, DLP, Plasma? Like I said earlier these diagnostic lights dealt with a sony t.v. Good Luck:)

The monitor is a NEC plasmasync 50mp2. If it is the power supply I can replace it but how much is a new supply and where would I get one.

You are more than likely looking at a power failure issue. We can strike the bulb out of the equation because plasma t.v's use gases instead of a bulb/lamp to emit light. If it is on warranty i would call a service technician to come in emmediatly and get it fixed, however if it is not on warranty then this can be very expensive but you still have some options, you can call a technician in to diagnose the problem and get estimate on the cost to fix the t.v which would cost you maybe $100 for the estimate and see if it is worth fixing or you can have him come in and fix everything but it might not be cheap. It all depends on the problem really but in general these technicians are expensive. Maybe somone you know can fix it cheaper too.
