Which receiver?

I have narrowed my choice of receiver down to two..Onkyo TXSR875 or Yamaha RX-V1800. Just curious to see which receiver you guys prefer and why. Thanks, Todd

Onkyo Pros:

Power, lots of it. It's stable with 4 ohm loads, very stable. It has Reon HQV scaling, which is about the only thing it really adds that makes it cost more than the TX-SR805 (which uses a similar connection scheme and the same amplifier section). It features Audyssey AutoEQ.

Yamaha Pros:

Proven track record with HDMI handshaking. It also looks sharper. It doesn't run as hot as the Onkyo and has less reported problems overall.

Either receiver is great...

What speakers will you be using with your receiver, do you have a power amplifier?

Ive been a Yamaha fan for a while now.I recently bought a 661.For the price I think its tough to beat.If the 1800 is as nice as the 661 you'll be very happy.My Yamaha's have always been good to me.

But now on the other side.I came across a deal I thought was too good to pass up.I found an 805 for 500.00.I got it all hooked up and all I can say is WOW!! It truly is a night and day difference to me.The sound seems a little more "lively".Even my wife noticed a difference.After listening to them pretty much side by side the Yamaha had a very "neutral sound" compared to the 805 it was actually a little on the dull side.The 805 sounds more open and bright.The highs sound much better.

Keep in mind that of course this is my opinion with mine (and the wifes) ears.Im using Def Tech speakers all around.For me the bottom line is they are are both excellent units,just take some time and do the best you can to throughly audition both.

Unless Onkyo has changed its set of surround options, I would go with the Yamaha. I personally like having the option of using the original DPL, as DPL II is not simply decoding, but always alters the sound from the original encoding. At least in the past, Onkyo eliminated DPL from the possible options, whereas Yamaha lets you use either DPL or DPL II or DPL IIx. Many people, however, love DPL II (and DPL IIx) and do not care what was in the original soundtrack. They, of course, are free to listen to whatever digital signal processing modes that they have and wish to use.

And if the other comments that you have received are true, I would definitely go with the Yamaha:

Less problems is definitely something to think about. Do you want the thing to actually work and do what it is supposed to do?

I personally have a Yamaha RX-V2700, and love it. The RX-V1800, with the additional surround processing capabilities should be more "future proof", though, of course, no A/V receiver is likely to be completely "future proof". I say, go with the Yamaha, absolutely.

I wanted to add the following to my original post as an end note, but this forum would not allow it. So it is this additional post.

For anyone interested in how DPL (Dolby Pro Logic) works, you can view a pdf at:

As one can see there, the original encoding for DPL is with 4 channels and with limited frequency response at the rear. Consequently, any "decoding" that results in 5 (or more) channels and without limited frequencies to the rear is altering the original material. So, if you want to be able to hear exactly what was encoded, you need the original DPL. If you do not care whether you hear what was encoded or not, you can do whatever processing you want that your equipment can do.

They have the same processing capabilities in terms of multichannel LPCM, either will work great.

My buddy has the Yamaha I have the Onkyo 875. We had some problems getting the Yamaha to properly play the audio codecs of the PS3. No problem with the Onkyo. On screen display is more confusing on the Yamaha.
The THX Ultra certification is nice, I have become a sucker for their sound fields. Negative on the Onkyo, it runs hot.
