You'll need more info for this group

Greetings....
I'm new to this also. This site is great but you need to supply more info to get a good response.

What's your budget, what's the size of the room, movies or music, TV and connectivity to it.

Keep in mind also, the speakers are the biggest hit on the budget but they are the most important aspect, and then a receiver/amp configuration to drive them.

Hope this helps some. Check out the amp and loudspeaker sections to see MANY similar posts to your own.

then a receiver/amp configuration to drive them.
Quoted above lies the biggest reason for choosing you speakers first, then the receiver. Some speakers can present a difficult load to the amplifier and may require you to choose a beefier amp than you originally planned. It's worth it, though, if you find a set of speakers that you truly love. If you buy the receiver first, you may find that you have to limit your speaker selection to those the amp is capable of powering, or having to pass up a set of speakers you live because the amp can't drive them.

I will take a chance without sufficient information.

Proposed 5.1 System

Yamaha RX-V661 Receiver $499.99
SVS SBS-01 5.1 Speakers and subwoofer system - $999

This is about the lowest price for a good audio system that has all the latest features. From here you go up in price.

Since the PS3 can only decode the HD audio formats internally I see no reason to get the RX-V663, the RX-V661 should suffice. That SVS system that Exit proposed would be excellent. You should spend at least 2/3 of your audio budget on speakers, so that amount is about right.

Just don't pick inefficient speakers (anything with a rating below 85 dB/1watt/1meter) and/or below 6 ohm impedance.
