Remote speaker volume controls

I see these sold for about 25.00. Is there any problem using them in a home freely?
I have a vintage receiver I want to use indoors and the speakers will be outside near my hot tub. Sometimes I need to turn off or turn down the sound. With no remote, is this a viable solution?

Any down-side to these gizmos?

Thanks

I would not use them near the hot tub. Water and electricity don't mix - electrocution hazzard. You would be better off getting a wireless remote for use by the hot tub. You wouldn't want to get out of the tub all wet and touch the volume control because of electrocution hazzard. Think of worse case possibilities that can happen.

Outdoor VC

There are VCs and enclosures that are rated for outdoor use but expect to pay much more than $25. Otherwise, install the indoor variety inside close to the patio door.

Dunno, have not bought a dimmer switch to see. Whatever controls light switch is what I was thinking.

Wouldn't placing a resistance on the speaker wire risk damaging the amp?

Vc

I want to put a volume control on a screened in porch. Would a light dimmer work just as well? Cheap at lowes or home depot. Thx
First off a VC is stereo and controls 2 channels of audio. Second, the inexpensive dimmers work by clipping off a portion of the AC waveform. Clipping = Bad for speakers.

I would recommend an impedance matching VC from Phoenix Gold or similar for about $25. With the screened in pourch, the weatherproof enclosure probably wont be necessary.
