Ok Guys here it is, about 6 months ago I bought a pair of paradigm phantoms (floor standing) to replace the titans book shelves. To be honest I was never pleased with the sound of the phantoms, to see if I could get better sound I even went and bought a Behringer A500 amp to power them.

The sound improved somewhat but I still did not hit nirvana. So today and friend of mine came over and he love the phantoms, so I said why not buy them so he said "YEAH" So it’s a done deal.

I called up my paradigm dealer and told him I had US$800 to spend on a pair of floor standing speakers, he suggested the Monitor 7 for $550 and the 9 for U$800.

What would you guys suggest that get as a pair of floor standing that would go with my Paradigm CC170 front channel.

Does the Monitors 7’s sound good and if I opt for the Monitor 9’s are they really much better than the 7’s?

Let me know.

Bro.

I actually have owned a set of Paradigm 9Se MkIII that are the predecessors of the monitor 9. They are excellent. I would spend the extra and get the 9 over the 7 as the bass will be a bit lower and the volume a bit better. I had the same choice when I bought mine and took the 9 just on the fact I was getting a bit more.

Not much difference in the high end (use the same tweeter) but the low end extention is worth it.

Blackfly,

Thanks for the reply, I have another question. How is the head room on the monitor 9's. Would you believe me if I tell you that the titans has more head room that my plantoms.

I switched between them both for about an hour and I was astonished. I must admit though that the highs on the titans are harsh comparing to the phantoms.

From my listening the v.5 9's are much, much better speakers than the 7's. They have a much fuller sound and are much more dynamic so I say the 9's for sure and you are getting a great price on them anyways.

Honestly, I'd step up to the paradigm studio 20's before spending a lot on their monitor line. I think their studio line is a HUGE step up from their monitor line. If you have a sub, it shouldn't be a big deal that they don't have the kind of bass you get from a tower speaker.

About your center channel...if you are listening to movies more than music I would definitely upgrade the center channel. The CC 390 would be a good fit with the monitor 7's or 9's.

If you want to stay within the price bracket mentioned and looking for a better sound, I suggest you audition PSB's image series. In my opinion, its a better performing series than Paradigm's monitor series. If you want better, then PSB Imagae series, you need to step up into Paradigm's studio series.

I would also look at the PSBs or a number of others before "upgrading" to the monitors.

The suggestion of moving up to the Studios is another good one. I paid around 1k for my 40's and I would suggest you have a listen to them and see if you can talk them down.
