Question regarding audio output connection

Hi,
I recently bought an Oppo 980-H universal dvd player. I have a Yamaha HTR 5840 receiver, Klipsch quintet II 5.1 speaker system with KSW-10 sub woofer. The TV is just a regular flat screen CRT

In my old dvd player which was just a regular DVD player off the shelf off walmart, I had connected the Coax cable to the receiver for audio and S-video for video input to the reciever.

When I was reading the reviews of the OPPO digital player, it said used analog outputs for the audio. and Coax for the DTS, pro Logic II etc..etc..

Here is my question. Can I connect both analog input and the coax input to the reciever from the DVD player. And, how will the receiver know which one to use for which format (DVD, SACD etc..)

Thanks,
Vishwa

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that

Analog audio connection is used for multi-channel audio (SACD) and should be plugged in your multi-channel input. Coax doesn't have enough bandwidth for multi-channel PCM. dts and pro logic are sent in a compressed bitstream to your receiver so there is much less information. If the player has internal dts/pro logic decoder, I would simply use the multi-channel connections when watching movies.

Thanks for the response. So, if I am playing say the DARK SIDE OF THE MOON SACD, and have the coax cable connected between the player and the reciever, are you saying be as good as connecting analong inputs( 5 inputs to the reciever from player). And assuming that I do, what is it that I need to do on the reciever to make sure that it uses the the analog inputs and not the coax. The receiver has DTS and prologic decoders. What should I set the reciever to to listen to the SACD? I am not sure If I am being clear. I dont know much about these things. That's the reason for me to ask such silly questions

No. you won't be hearing the SACD odr DVD-Audio layer. You'll only be hearing what they chose to pass in a digital format, be it stereo, DD, or DTS.

Simply put, you NEED to use those analog connections for SACD or DVD-Audio. Your receiver won't decode them.

And assuming that I do, what is it that I need to do on the reciever to make sure that it uses the the analog inputs and not the coax. The receiver has DTS and prologic decoders.
This varies freom receiver to receiver. Check your manual on how to assign these inputs to a selection.

When you've completed the previous step, this one will fall right into place.

I don't think the OP's receiver allows for assinging the mult-ch. input to another input. I own the 5740 (the year before) and it doesn't. I think all he has to to is to plug the two audio outputs to the receiver -- coax to dvd and multi-ch. to multi-ch input -- and then switch back and forth between inputs on the receiver depending on what is played. That is if the oppo player allows simultaneous outputs.

Thanks a lot again for the response guys.. one more thing..

So, do this apply to the audio part of a movie on DVD too or is it just for SACD and DVD-Audio?

Cheers

I agree with this. I am doing the same with my PS3. It cam stream audio simultaneously via analog and optical. I just switch my Pre depending on what I'm watching. If the OPPO cannot do it simultaneously you should be able to switch an option on it.
