PS3 Blu-Ray, No Picture over HDMI!

I just recently switched from a PS2/3 Component cable to an HDMI cable on the PS3. I was previously able to watch my Blu-Ray movies but, can't now that i've plugged in the HDMI.

I switched it off as suggested in another thread. I now have sound but, still no picture. I looked at BD/DVD Settings and everything is set to Automatic.

This is really wierd since I can play games (which are Blu-ray based) and watch DVD's but, if I put a Blu-Ray movie in, I get a black screen with the little spinning disc in the upper right corner...then the TV's blue screen appears and says "No Signal."

Am I missing something?

I'd run the HDMI check again and let it tell you what resolutions are available for your display. Doesn't sound like a handshake issue, but may be a resolution problem (trying to send a resolution your set doesn't like?).

Thank you! Done, no change. It's a Samsung LCD that's 1080p. Shouldn't be an issue. The PS3 was actually outputting 1080p over Component and the Samsung was accepting it. Plus, it plays COD4 @ 1080p over HDMI. I can't figure this one out.

Try calling Sony at 800-345-7669. I had some weird setup issues for my PS3 I couldn't figure out and they were able to help me with them.

:D Thanks, I am actually on hold as I'm reading your post....

I also tried the reset feature in the PS3 Knowledge Base. They say to start w/ the PS3 in standby (red light on), then hold your finger on the soft on/off button for > 5 sec. until the light cycles green then back to red. Then when you turn it on, the resolution(s) and output(s) is/are reset and the HDMI setup automatically appears. No Luck.

I'll let you know what they say.

OK, here's the deal.

If you're having the same problem, go to the XMB > Settings > BD/DVD Settings

Scroll down to BD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI)
Set it to "Off"

I had mine set to "Automatic". But apparently, the "Automatic" setting isn't automatic.

Now the Blu-Ray movies are playing w/ no issue.

I guess the question is, how do you know when to set it to "On"? Or, how do you know if the BD (Blu-Ray Disc) is recorded at 24Hz?

Glad you were able to get it resolved. I have mine set to automatic, but honestly a lot of the setup choices don't really make sense and the manual is almost worthless at explaining some of what the choices mean or do. I've had to call them a few times.

In case you don't have it, save this link to the PS3 system update, and check it occasionally to make sure you have the latest updates.

That seems weird, I have mine on "auto" and it works fine. I never took the manual out of the box so I dont know if it explains anything or not:D

I have mine set on Auto too and no issues. Maybe your set doesn't like 24fps?

Maybe. I think that setting is only for BD's recorded at 24fps. I don't know how you'd know if they're 24Hz BD's. I doubt they're labeled as such.

It worked just fine on automatic when I was using the PS2/3 Component cable thru the Multi/AV output. This only became an issue when I switched to HDMI.

I just registered to say thank you, I was having the exact same problem and I couldn't figure it out. I was trying to show my parent's blu ray on their TV and the fact it wasn't working was less than impressive.

Thank you!!!
