Do people really want to see movies on their phones?

Apple TV, Vudu, Movielink, Unbox: the Internet is littered with ventures that offer the ability to download movies legally online. Few have had the predicted success. A new report by the Diffusion Group, a research firm, says that less than 10 percent of adults with broadband connections have ever used such services, and only about 1 percent use them frequently. TDG surveyed 1,975 broadband users.

The problem, said Michael Greeson, the report’s author, is that many services deliver movies solely to users’ computers. Those services that pipe movies to the television generally charge $100 to $300 for equipment.

“People want to watch long-form video on their television sets,” Mr. Greeson said. “We put the most money into the living room TV. That’s where our high-def sets are, and that’s where the surround sound is.”

By contrast, viewers are happy to watch short-form video — TV shows and the like — on the Internet. But that interest does not carry over to cellphones yet. “All our research keeps pointing at a lack of interest among consumers in viewing video on the mobile phone,” Mr. Greeson said. So much for I phone hype.

I think the only thing that would make much sense on a cell phone would be broadcast TV, I could see myself catching a game during my lunch break, or watching the news and weather but not much else.
Other possibility would be a optical projector for eyeglasses, but even that would be limited, imo.

I may not use it but I would definately like to be able to watch both tv and preferably movies via cell phone. I don't work in an regular office type job environment. At times I spend extended periods standing around doing essentially nothing. Something lightweight, pocket sized, and easy to turn off when I need to appear professional would help pass the time. PQ would not really be an issue for that type of use. I also think a lot of students would use something like that. As long as it was cheap and easy to use.

BTW, Verizon has tv available for cell phones, but its only a few channels and its expensive for what you get.

Live tv would be nice, but I don't really care to watch much else on my phone. I have the ability to rip a dvd and convert it to .3gp with crystal clarity and watch it on my phone, and I really don't use it. I have a 2 gig micro SD card in my phone (Nextel i880)and have several tv show rips and other videos and music on my phone, and almost never use these features.

Until they make a blackberry battery that doesn't degrade within 6 months (I'm on my 3rd BB, after 6 months of use you're lucky if you get 2 days of standby out of the battery) I can't see myself being able to watch many shows and/or movies on my phone. On top of the fact that I really just don't care to anyway :D.

people may think they "need" to watch videos on their phone.....until they need to make or receive a critical phone call and the battery is dying after a session of video watching. I would never compromise my ability to make/receive a phone call for something as silly as a 2" diagonal screen movie.

X2 to that. I've been eyeballing a Voyager because it can play music/video, but the problem is that it is somewhat limited, afaik. Besides, I use my phone at least 3 hours a day, and watching video/audio would kill it sooner.
Kinda why I got an iPod, just so I can keep my phone charged longer and I'll have something to do when I travel :D

Mini Tv

I can't imagine much call for movie type entertainment on such a small screen....I can imagine a market for commercial news stations etc...but they have commercial sponsers driving them and really ought to find a way to deliver their content for free....

I can't wait to see the new Terminator movie on my Nokia N95 cell phone with a small crappy display and a sound quality of a 25 year old radio. They claim that this Nokia is the state of the art multimedia product....... Yeah right ==:-O

Movies on a phone? Got to be kidding. Isn't the idea of a movie a BIG screen? And BIG sound? If I wanted a little picture, I could watch my neighbor's TV from my house.

I don't even want my damn little phone to do half the stupid garbage that it does.... do I need movie watching cap. on my phone? F NO! it's already hard enough to navigate the badly designed menu structure and $hitty little 4 color display (j/k about the 4 colors)!!!

oh, and another comment... I know I will regret this but: apple can kiss my white as$ with their new monopoly on technology, I hope they crash and burn as a company, so they know just how far you cannot go.... later~!

Kind of agree with you on this Apple thing, they're really not about being open, everything is proprietary.....
