I just got a blue ray dvd player .
I have an older 5.1 pre amp with s -out , coaxial digital out and toslink . No- dvi or hdmi
My new tv has hdmi , s video . component video etc.
My components are away from the tv . and I would like to send the audio to the pre amp and the video to the tv . I do not mind at this time to manualy switch the input on the tv or manualy select inputs on the pre amp .
Could I connect a 40 ' HDMI cable from the DVD to the tv and an audio cable to the DVD to the pre amp? concerned about loosing picture quality , can you split the hdmi . will the tv get sound that I can keep off . will the dvd player shut off the other outputs when the HDMI is pluged in ?

Since you don't list the Blu-ray player I can't tell if you have analogue outputs. Basically you'd send HDMI to the display (for the picture only). Audio would go from the player to your 5.1 preamp assuming it had analogue 5.1 inputs. If it does not, then you can take the digital audio outputs from the BD player, however you no longer have the ability to play/hear high definition audio tracks in this manner.

PS. If you are going 40' with HDMI, please make sure the cable is truly certified to go that length at 1080p/60 - preferably with 12/16-bit Deep Color as well.

Short answer: Yes.

The BD player will still output audio (coax and/or optical) when the HDMI is connected to the TV.

The TV will get audio, but you can just disable the speakers or turn the TV volume to zero.

Thanks for the inputs !
The preamp is a Rotel RSP-976 ( looking at the "outlaw" in the future / if hdmi )
The dvd is a BDP-S301
(1080p/60 12/16bit deep color)this cable I will try to find (not sure what it means , but I will get one !)

Optical (Toslink) and digital coax are both the exact same thing, just with a different transmission method. They're both SPDIF digital audio and will get you Dolby Digital 5.1/DTS/etc. Doesn't really matter which you use. I use optical when I can cause fiber optics is cooler than copper ;)
