Surge protection advice

Seriously, I have no life.
so if i buy one of thesesmart UPC i need to basically run an in wall rated cord (behind the sheet rock) from my tv over to the rack ,30ft away? That will tie it all together in the main rack connected to one UPC. I looked up my Amp and it says Max Power consumption is 610 watts, the tv im gonna get uses 375 watts, the Blue ray is 33 watts, the Cd palyer i have is 50 watts. I guess ill need a UPC with atleast 1000 watts of power available? I dont see the amp drawing 610 watts unless its pushed to the max volume. Thank you to all who posted, im going to get it all squared away real soon. I will prolly get one of the main service surge protection devices as well.

Peace,
Tommy
It is a very good idea to leave some tolerance. I would recommend a 1.4 or 1.5KVA unit.

One last question...

Lots of good information in this thread, my last question is that of grounded outlets. I need to know if a non grounded 2 prong outlet negates the various protections offered by the equipment that has been discussed here.

Thanks to all.

As long as the UPS is grounded, using two pin connections will not negate the benefits.

Understood, what are my options for grounding if limited to the two pin outlet? Will using those 2 to 3 pin adapters and screwing it into the wal plate do the trick? Or are there other/better ways?

Thanks again for all the help and the swift responses!

Yes, it will do the trick, as long as the receptacle is grounded, which is code.

I personally don't see much value in a UPS, unless it is a computer. A UPS can prevent data loss on a computer. Not too many ways to lose data on electronic stuff...

On the other hand, the benefits of surge suppression are hard to ignore. To ensure a clean audio and video signal a line conditioner can also be very beneficial (the expensive part).

My old surge suppressor was a low priced Monster unit that offered some basic line conditioning (about $90). I made the mistake of buying this with the TV at Tweeter and new ones can usually be had for about $65 from Amazon (HT800, etc.).

I just spent about $6K on my new home theater setup and decided to leave the old one on the Mitsubishi RP and get a slightly nicer one. I really liked the integrated look of the rack mounted units, even though I admit it is overkill. I was looking at the units from Panamax and Monster. I decided to spend close to $200 on a nicer unit.

Anyway, I stumbled across a deal I couldn't refuse. I found a stage 4 Panamax 5300-EX for only $249. These retailed for $550 and are simply last years models. The new ones offer more lights. I bought from here:

Lights closed the deal, right?

Low voltage situations and many other power ills are not handled by those devices. Non volatile memory does not like power swings either.

I would use one UPS for the system, since your walls are open. I would wire the TV outlet to wire to the UPS. That way you will also have less chance of ground loops. That is what I did.

Hi just reading this thread, as I am looking to wire my new TV to a dedicated electrical outlet and see that you've mentioned wiring the outlet to the UPS? Don't you just plug the tv into the UPS and the UPS into the outlet? I'm sorry if I'm be a total noob here... I was hoping to wire up the outlet to a power conditioning dedicated circuit breaker at the box - I don't even know if that exists. How do normal people wire up their wall-mounted TVs?

The only way to protect against lightning 100% of the time is to unplug it.

What power conditioner are you using? The best protection comes from UPS systems, they usually can power more than the TV. That is why I sent a cable in conduit from the UPS to the TV power outlet.

Hi - I'm a bit novice compared to you!! I haven't wired anything yet, and I'm looking to pick up a conditioner of some kind. I was going to run a brand new circuit from my house's main box to a dedicated outlet for the TV (this is all going in to an existing house, so I have to work within the context of existing walls, etc). I was just going to run the wire fromthe box to the new outlet, hook up the outlet and be done, but in that scenario there is no surge protector or power conditioner.

It sounds like you hardwired your UPS to an outlet for the TV? Is that right? How would you do that?

So very true.

I'm using a APC 1500 to hold everything but my sub. I live in the country so my power goes out all the time. If Im in the theater watching a movie and the power goes out the only way I know is because my Sub turns off.:D My UPS is in the closet so I don't here it beeping when it's on backup, but its deffinately a must have, and if you have a projector its not an option, its a MUST!

You plug in your UPS at the desired location, and run a cable from the UPS to a dedicated outlet behind the TV.
