Stupid High-Def Format Movies...

...I've been watching a lot of movies on BD lately. So today after running out of bd movies to watch I pulled out a few SD dvd's. All the sudden the audio seems "flat" and the video appears less than stellar on the SD flicks. I've gotten so spoiled with the hi-res picture and sound quality that I barely even want to watch movies in SD anymore. I thought the new format was supposed to make me happier overall, not ruin my dvd collection. Damn those high-def movies, damn them to h*ll.

I'm considering selling off most of my DVDs, just keeping my TV series & my top 50 or so movies. I haven't decided yet but if I do that's probably three or four hundred DVDs...

Standard def isnt that bad, neither is the audio...I think alot of this is a mental thing because you know its not the latest technology.

I always chuckle when I read posts from non-adopters who always seem write things like "480p is good enough". LOL....Yea right!!

I'm trying to keep the replacements down to a minimum, but it isn't easy. I tried to watch my "5th element" DVD recently and the picture/audio was so horrible compared to what I have grown used to..... I had to turn it off 15 minutes in and I ordered the 'Remastered BD" on Amazon.

Don't worry; in 10 or 20 years, they will come out with 23000p-3D with 27.3 sound (or some such thing) and then you will be back complaining about how dreadful your old 1080p discs look and sound. Then you will buy all of the same movies yet again. See how the system works?

I am reminded of what the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus said. If you had read him, you would have known that you should not try to get the best things, as they make you unhappy, as you have just said yourself. There are many people still happy with DVDs, and as long as they do not spoil themselves with HD, they may remain happy with them.

The latest and greatest is always sold to people who are unable to be happy with what they already have. Since there are many here like you, you at least will have plenty of company in your misery. But consider how much money you would have saved had you been content with DVD, as well as how much happier you would now be. We should expect people to object to what I am saying, as, if you will pardon the trite but often true expression, "misery likes company."

Epicurus was to ancient Greece in many ways......very similar to 60's hippie cooks that lived in communes void of electricity and running water.;)

Ahhh...we live amidst a society of malcontents. :p

I doubt if I'll sell my SD's...most of them will probably never make it to BD.:p

As I am new to HD, I have yet to watch an upconverted SD, but I know enough to not get my hopes up too high. That said, I think if the SD is mastered well onto a copy, the pq should be pretty good upconverted to 1080p...at least on a small screen (less than 120")! :D

I have borrowed both Blu and HD units to demo for a week each, I just dont think it was that huge of a difference...yes it is better and I would have bought one earlier though but waited for one to get killed off...last week that happened.
For now I am happy with my lowely 480P Lexicon I see some quietly laugh at but I do know I would rather have everything else I do and simply need to add a new disc player than have a small monitor, small speakers, budget reciever in a living room instead of a dedicated properly set-up and tuned space.

I'm still hearing that people are underwhelmed with the remasterd 5th Element Blu-Ray though so that might not be a good choice. I think I'll stick to the Superbit on that title.

That was from the first issue of BD of the 5th Element. It was remastered and re-released about a year later and now has both excellent sq and pq.

That's exactly why I made the point to say I got the remastered version:cool:

It's hit or miss on upconverted movies, but i think you nailed it. My experience is that more recent movies and older well mastered movies look far better upconverted than those that weren't. Some sd's do look near-hd in pq when upconverted.

Actually, some of the newer SD DVDs look so good (especially upscale to 1080p) and the sound is also pretty good (DD & DTS).

I think the older SD DVDs are more compressed on single layer discs. I think the newer SD DVDs are less compressed on double-layer discs.

True, SD DVDs will never look as good as most BDs, but these newer SD DVDs do look a lot better than all the older DVDs.
