Keeping it Clean: Wiring issue

Ok, I recently purchased the psb image series (as some of you already know). I opened the b15 (bookshelves) box to check in the back (because I want to mount them on the ceiling). If I'm correct, other bookshelves usually have a hole in the back so that you can mount them on the wall or ceiling, this doesn't have nothing.

Which leads to these questions. Do I need to drill a hole in the back (don't want to do this)

Secondly, if I purchase stands for them, how can I pass the wire cleanly. This really sucks, cause if I pass them through the ceiling and drop them, they're gonna look really bad with wires dropping in mid air. If i pass them by ground, everyone will be stepping on them, unless I pass them on one side of the wall.
And what really gets me mad in the end, forget about adding another 2 speakers for 7.1, I ain't putting those on stands.

Has anyone ever mounted these on a ceiling before? I believe that they weigh 12 lbs each.

I wouldn’t drill holes in the speakers as it may adversely affect the sound, unless you are installing a mounting bracket.

I think you will have better sound if you mount the speakers on the wall versus the ceiling.

I think you can find speaker brackets to mount your speakers with. I bought some from Radio Shack which would hold that weight and work.

I assume you don’t have a basement or crawl space because those are easier to run wires through. In that case you locate your speakers on the wall and drill a wire hole for each. Then you pound a big nail through the carpeted floor about 1” away from the wall under each speaker and you find the nails in the basement. Then measure in about 3” towards the wall to find the center of the stud wall. Drill a hole big enough to put a bent coat hanger through (i.e. about 1 ¾” diameter. Drop the speaker wire through the hole in the wall until it piles up on the bottom of the wall. Use a bent metal coat hanger and hook the wire and pull it through. Pull the nails out of the floor.

I don’t think you can adapt this too easily for a ceiling drop. You probably wouldn’t want to put locating holes in your ceiling, although they could be refilled. If you can find the stud wall from the attic and measure the distance of the speaker wire hole from the end of the room, you might be able to drill a hole in the stud wall from the attic the same distance. Then you could drop the wire down and use the coat hook from the speaker wire hole to pull the wire through. You would use the same technique to drop a wire behind the receiver.

If you want to use stands, mine have a hollow center which hides the wire. They won’t pass thick speaker wire though.

Hope this helps and maybe someone else has a better method.

Bookshelf speakers almost never have a hole in them for mounting purposes. Though some may have it, bookshelf are almost always too heavy to be held up by a single screw. What you are thinking of is satellite speakers, which tend to be much smaller. These tend to be more of the cube variety and are struggle at replicating upper bass frequencies from 80 Hz on up through 200 Hz.

I would certainly not drill a hole in your new PSB's. That would have all kinds of deleterious effects on sound quality. The integrity and structure of the cabinet is very important in reproducing good sound.

Would I would recommend is a sturdy mount instead. What I used for my PSB 2B, which are substantially larger, is this mount:

It is not small or innocuous, but it does a great job of holding a substantial speaker. You may be able to get away with something less obtrusive, as your speakers are smaller, but you will need a good mount. Not one made for the satellite variety.

ok, I should've specified a bit more, its in the basement. Its an unfinished basement. Ill be moving in 3-4 months. the back wall is too far from where the couch facing the tv will be, so wall mounts are out of the question. I guess what I will do is pass the cable to the left, it will run along the wall (behind the couch) and then come back out to the back speakers.

Its just for 7.1, it will be out of the question because the right surround speaker, if its not hanging on the wall, will be in the way to enter the couch area. I wish i could draw a picture. If i had a scanner I would be able to scan the plans. I guess I'm just gonna go with a 6.1 setup then.

Do I need to order an identical image b15 for the back center bookshelf?
Also, where can I purchase the stands for cheap, the ones for the b15's?

You can place these speakers on wall shelve because they are front ported. I have used a similar set up with a pair of brackets and wood shelving cut to size per each speaker and ran the wires through the ceiling down the wall into each speaker location.

Have you thought of calling PSB tech support and asking if they have a mounting solution for you? Maybe they have mounting brackets? Or tell you what you can and shouldn't do to them?

I use these for my wall mounts. I know you said ceiling but this companmy offers a host of speaker mounting solutions. Myabe one will fit yours.
