I see there are now 4 versions of the PS3. I read that some can play PS2 games and some can not. I have a PS2 so this isn't a dire need, but it would be nice.

My use for this will be about 80%/20% movies to games. Obviously I would like to spend as little as I can get away with.

Any advice?

Hmmm... its for movies, technically you dont need the larger hard drive. I use it for both, but mostly gaming. I have the 80GB. Let's put it this way, I've downloaded some demos, patches for games and somehow I only have 45GB left. Just to give you an idea. If you are looking to play ps2 games on it, go with the 80Gb, if not get at least the 40GB. Unless you can find the 60GB version.

not all previous games from ps2 and ps1 will work properly with the ps3.
You can do a search with the games you have now. but you have to choose between the 60GB and 80GB model ps3. It will tell you if those games have any issues to date.
If I am not mistaken, I beleive that the 80GB version is better for ps2 games as it is hardware backwards compatible and not software backwards compatible.
But then again, once you rent a few ps3 games, I am not sure you'll go back to ps2 ones. Especially Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Excellent game.

Does the PS3 have an IR remote option? Will my Harmony 880 work with the unit?

From what I understand it wont.
You will either have to wait for some IR to BT convertor to become available or your other option, i have heard that other IR remotes (Intek and a few others) for the ps3 come with an IR to USB dongle and apparently people have tried it with their harmony's and they work.
As far as the 880 goes (specific model), you will have to make sure it works with the IR to USB connector. you will have to research it. hope this helps.

No it won't. When I bought my PS3, I tried to set my 880 up via the Harmony web site to operate the PS3 and the web site said that the remote was incompatible with the PS3. Evidently Bluetooth is vastly different than standard IR control.

The 60GB is hardware backward compatible, while the 80GB has a software emilator for PS2. The 40GB doesn't even play PS2 games

I really don't think the ability to play PS2 games is that big of a deal. First, you still have a PS2. I know that it's not the ideal solution, but if there's a game that you love so much that you cannot live without playing, keep the PS2 hooked up and use it. The PS3 is designed to be connected via HDMI anyway, so it's not like you're taking up an input by keeping the PS2 plugged in. Second, I've had my PS3 since October, and I had a decent collection of PS2 games (I generally sold them off every 4-5 months), and I have yet to play one PS2 game in my 60 GB PS3. The PS3 game quality blows the PS2 right out of the water. Most of the major franchises are releasing their latest sequels on the PS3 sometime this year (e.g. MGS, GTA, DMC, GoW), so I don't think there's much that existed on the PS2 that won't be available on the PS3 by the end of the year.

my thoughts exactly, I wasn't sure how much he really liked his ps2 games. as soon as I got my ps3 console, I sold my ps2 and all its games, games I hadn't even played yet, cause once you start ps3, you ain't going back. Great console I love it.
