What Blu-ray Player Should I Choose?

Something else to consider

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best Blu-ray player to choose out of the following models ONLY, because I can get them for pretty cheap. I plan to use this mainly for Blu-ray and upconverting to my Toshiba 50" (720p, but accepts 1080i) rear projection LCD. The video and audio will be running though HDMI to my Yamaha rx-v1800. Thanks.....models are as follows:

1) Samsung BD-P1400/X
2) Sharp BD-HP20U
3) Samsung BD-P1200
4) Sony PS3
5) Sony BDP-S300
The Panasonic BMP-BD30 is a fine player, and since you have the RX-V1800 why not get a machine that will output DTS-MA via bitstream?? The Panasonic is ever bit as fast as the PS3 when it comes to loading discs. The only thing that Profile 2.0 will allow is internet connectivity on discs that offer that feature. (Not a big deal in my opinion)

As far as movies that have a DTS-MA track there are quite a few. Check out every single release from 20th Century Fox. To name a few.. Live Free or Die Hard, Sunshine, Ice Age 2, Simpson's, X-men 3........

I also have a PS3 and it works fine too.

So am I understanding that the PS3 can't send 7.1 audio over HDMI until there is a firmware update?
Only for a DTS HD 7.1 signal, that is sent as a dts core 5.1 signal at a lower rate of 1.5mps (still very nice). Regular DTS, DD, DDTrue HD, etc gets up to a full 7.1 signal via hdmi.

AFAIK there are only a few movies, Pans Labrynth, House of 1,000 Corpses, and the Condemned that even have the DTS HD MA 7.1 track. I'm sure there are a few more out there and some yet to be released, but the point is: at this juncture there aren't too many movies using that audio format - yet.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (30th Anniversary Ultimate Edition) has both True HD and DTS-MA.

The Lost City has both LPCM and DTS-MA.

Otherwise, I believe my previous list contains MA as the only lossless source. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. Cheers.

So it is my understanding that the PS3 cannot currently decode DTS-HD MA or send this or Dolby Digital TrueHD via bitstream through HDMI to an AVR for decoding (ie my Yammy RX-V1800). Has anyone read or seen (with some proof) that when Sony releases the 2.0 update if it will be able to do all of these capabilities (especially the bit-streaming of the new formats with or without down-mixing 7.1 to 5.1)? Also, is the internal hardware even capable of such a feat?

Also, I'm sort of leaning toward the PS3 because it is also a media server and I really wanted that in my receiver, but it was a little out of my price range, but if there are no plans to be able to send the new audio formats via bitstream though HDMI, then I would be kind of stuck in a "catch 22" with features I want. haha

Thanks

I have tried this myself, and the PS3 cannot pass DTS MA or TrueHD via bitstream for external decoding. It does decode TrueHD internally and outputs it as Multi Channel PCM.
