need help - best way connecting my system??? (fairly simple!)

hey guys, i got a new TV so now im looking at the best way to connect my gear up..

at the moment i have my dvd player connected to my receiver with the video RCA lead for video and then fibre optical for the audio.

im looking at what the best cable would be for picture quality running from the receiver to the tv for watching dvd's. my tv inputs are hdmi, component video, s-video and standard rca input. on my receiver i have s-video, rca, and component inputs but no hdmi.

what would be the best method to connect my tv to my amp in this case?

next question, i want to know the best way i should connect my audio for when watching tv. the tv supports standard rca, hdmi, and optical. however on my receiver im already using the optical input for my dvd player..

any help would be great, if you want to know anything else just ask.

equipment im using is listed in my signature and im only using my ps2 for dvds AT THE MOMENT.

on the video side, with the recv, go with the components, including the dvd if avial. your equipment doesnt list your tv source.

thanks for that. when you say the tv source, what do you mean? my tv has a built in digital tuner so when watching tv all i want is the audio sent to my receiver to play through my surround set up.

reverse feed the audio out of the tv in to the recv, i couldnt find your tv, but it should have a digital audo output, which would do the trick, unless your recv is feedinf a second zone, which in that cas you will want to run analog out also, as most recv cant proccess digital to second zones (when they are powering them)

Judging from your rear panel pic in your other thread, you are not using your best connections. It looks like your DVD player has DVI. Get a DVI-HDMI adapter and run that to the TV for best DVD video. Likewise, your DVD player has Digital coaxial audio and so does your receiver. It's the single black RCA-type connection. Connect the two black connections from DVD to receiver. Now the optical audio port on the receiver is open to accept optical from the TV for TV viewing.

Edit-The PS2 can be hooked up as it is, but I would recommend using component video (red,green, blue) for best picture.

hi and thanks for the reply. my tv does has optical out but im using my only optical connection on my receiver from my dvd player which is my ps2 (see the short clue coloured lead). the DVI is actually on my digital tv box which im no longer using.

Wow, that threw me off the target.

So the real issue is that you have two components that only use optical, but you only have one optical input port? Sad to say but the only options I can think of are to swap the optical cables whenever you switch sources, choose one component to connect with L/R analog RCA, find a 2 into 1 toslink switcher or upgrade the receiver.

i can just use anologue on TV i spose as optical would be best when watching dvd's..

i had my tv on this morning and its only connected through analogue, yet when i was watching one of the HD channels it was using dolby digital and it was splitting it up, i had speech coming out the centre and the main speakers just had other sounds and the surrounds were surrounds.. weird..

next thing.. if i were to get a dvd player that supported HDMI, i could run my dvd player straight to the TV and then use coax or something for surround?? would that work??

That would work just fine. But since you have your connectivity issues worked out, why not save up for a BD player with really good upscaling. Get the best out of that nice new TV.

Blu-Ray Disc, also available on the PS3 if you are so inclined to upgrade. If you haven't seen a demo, you will be stunned at what Blu-Ray can look like on your new TV...stunned. Blu-Ray players also tend to be very good upconverting DVD players since they generally use very good video processors.

Surf the internet on your giant new TV, that is. The best part of that is when you have a bunch of people over and want to show them You Tube videos or something, you show it on your main display instead of having everybody crowd around your computer monitor.

It's also a wireless music server that will play all the music on your computer through your main system.

..but i have my computer hooked up to the tv and my receiver for audio now so im already on my giant tv, and you tube movies and those sort of things looks awsome
