After having the issues with my currant 2 chan stereo system{ needing replacement} and the crappy audio I get out of my currant HT system....
I need some help. I am a novice to Audio but am really getting into it. It's a hobby I will enjoy for a while after giving up the drums. My question.
Is it possible on a blue collar budget
500-1000 rec
1000-1500 speakers
200-400 blue ray----- or use my PS3

to have a great Audio system for music and HT? I would still like an EQ for audio but find that this might be impossible to have with a 5-1 or 7.1 system. I am finding that my currant Onkyo system is only 3 years old but does not except HDMI form the PS3. I can watch blue ray movies hooked straight to my screen, but can not get the big sound from my receiver. Am I missing something?

Please need help with some purchases...or solutions for you pro's.

How do you have the audio hooked up now from the ps3 to the receiver? If you have an optical cable between the two you should be getting as least DD5.1.

Now as for a new system. There's a lot of talk about the upcoming (I think in April) Yamaha 663, with HDMI1.3 and a nice feature set. It will be on the low side of the budget to give you more money for the speakers if you want. You can also just keep using the ps3 for Blu-Ray, again more money for speakers. Now speakers are where you're going to hear most of the difference. Go out and listen to as many brands as you can and see what you like. There are so many brands out there to look at; Paradigm, PSB, B&W, Klipsch, JBL, Axiom, AV123, SVS.... the list goes on and on.

Go out and listen and let us know what you like.

I have never hooked it up to the receiver. Didn't even know I could. How would one hook up a ps3 to a Receiver that doesn't have an HDMI and a tv that has a few of them to get sound and Picture to the system?

Run the HDMI straight to the TV and use the optical port on the back of the PS3 to an optical port on the back of the receiver.
