Building Speaker Cables

I recently read the Audioholics' review:
http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/cables/diy-speaker-cable-faceoff

and have gotten a bug to try and replicate their CAT-5 version of the DIY cables. (see picture on last page) However, I'm having difficulty finding some of the necessary parts for the building. Does anyone have recommendations for a supplier for the tubing they used, appropriate heat shrink tubing and decent (but reasonable) connectors?

Thx!

I got everything I needed for mine from Blue Jean Cables and Parts Express. My BJC order arrived today, not too bad for a Friday order.;)

I got most my stuff from parts express and wirecare.com. Pretty affordable to make some good looking cables.

Hey, thanks for the feedback guys! :D

I had mentioned my interest in building speaker wires based off CAT 5/6 wire in another post and received a response to the effect that that type of wire may result in damage to my amplifier. Has anyone else heard of that and if so, could they explain how that damage might occur and if its possible to avoid.

My idea is to copy the shoot out #3 and bundle three lengths (divided between positive and negative) per wire to increase the overall transmission gauge.

Cat 5 will generally be high in capacitance. Some amps do not like high capacitance speaker cables. Not being into amp design I do not know the reasons for this, although a search of this forum may provide an answer. Anyway, if you want the total teflon cable (teflon insulation on each wire and a teflon jacket) I'm probably the only source for short runs (less than a 1000 foot reel - because I bought two reels a couple of years ago and still have plant and I mean plenty left). Your best bet for a low capacitance CAT 5 cable will most likely be a six cable modified circular braid. This will consist of two CAT 5 cables run straight and 4 CAT 5 cables braided around it.

Also, in general, you'll need 20 - 30% more cable than the finished length speaker cable. So, for a 10 foot cable start with 13 foot lengths. 70 cents per foot plus 6$ S&H (up to two hundred feet, and I'll include the instructions for the circular braid). PM me.

For the connectors I use GLS. I like them because they are very beefy and inexpensive and use two screws to hold the cable

For the heat shrink stuff, I usually get mine from Merithian (merithian.com) or Heatshrink.com. I also use shaped pieces from Nelco products for the ends. In the post attached below, the bottom of the first page you'll see some pictures of the cable I think you want to make. You can also see the shaped end, barely (under the heat shrink label).

The Naim amps come to mind that needs is own low capacitance cables or it goes puff,:D and self destructs.

Mudcat is this the 'shaped end' you mean?
This link may help. It has a better picture.

These will work okay for most applications of DIY cables. However, they are not heat shrink. I have found that for CAT 5 speaker cables, whether twisted or braided, heat shrink is basically required to effectively hold the twist or braid. So I found these (scroll to the middle of the page). I buy them from Nelco though, they were cheaper when I purchased several dozen of them a couple of years ago (they run about $12 each - an if you want some I have some +S&H). See attachments, I couldn't find a picture of the two-way though - but you'll get the general idea.
