Any idea which Blu-Ray profile it will support?

I just did a quick look at it. Nothing in-depth.

Yeah, everyone (Panasonic press, CES, ect.) is saying Profile 2.0, which makes the $2K Denon DVD-3800BD blu-ray player out of date already!:D

Is there a price or release date on it yet?

My friend went into BB the other day and the sales guy was offering him the BD10 for $299 and he was about to pull the trigger. I went to BB this weekend to ask about the BD50 since the BD10 is now officially discontinued and it is actually in their system. According to the computer it is selling for $599 but no ETA on it yet. Panasonic should officially lower the price of the BD30 to $399 and sell this baby for $499. They would have the market cornered at this price range.

$500 for this BD50 would be so awesome!

On the negative side, I guess my 6 month old BD10 would only be worth $150 on eBay? Ouch! I might as well just keep it for the DVD-A feature of the BD10, if the BD50 cannot play DVD-A, which I don't think it can because I have not heard one word on it.

Hey that is a nice looking player....

Do you guys think I would still have a good experience with a BR player if I didn't have 1080P.... Still running the last gen panny plasma's with 1080i.

I use my PS3 on my 768p Panny plasma. And the Panny smokes the Toshiba 1080p LCD it replaced in PQ. Even my wife who could care less about this stuff says the plasma was a lot better than the LCD.

I'm running my BR through my PS3 @ 1080i and it looks phenomenal. I've also had it running on a 720p LCD and it looked great. I'd definately say go for it.

The resolution of that plasma is probably 1365 x 768 right? In that case, usually people run 720p instead of 1080i, which doesn't have to be deinterlaced. Either way, you'll still see a definate improvement over SD DVD.

My plasma can take a 1080p source through hdmi so when I first got it I set my PS3 to both 720p and 1080p. I found that on 1080p the picture looked slightly better. Even though his plasma is not 1080p a lot of Panasonic models are known to still accept a 1080p signal.

  • Internal Decoders for DTS-HD MA, DTS-HD HR, TrueHD, LPCM.
  • 7.1 Analog Output.
  • Ethernet.
Are you sure it can decode the new HD audio formats? From the description, on the Panasonic website, it just states "compatible" whatever that means.
I am assuming it does though since it has the analog outputs.....

The DMP-BD50 is compatible with the newest Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD™ 7.1-channel surround sound formats. Sit back and enjoy the incredibly rich, clear and faithful surround sound these high-data formats make possible.

I believe this means it can decode and pass the Hi-Res tracks through the 7.1 analogs, or over HDMI using PCM. I'm pretty sure it will not bitstream TrueHD or DTS-HD MA.

I am eagerly awaiting this guy as well. I don't have HDMI on my receiver, so if I can put off buying a new receiver a little longer and utilize the analog connections, that will take care of that for me for a while :)

The CES report of this player said it would internally decode all of the new formats.

Its main claim to fame is that it WILL bitstream the new codecs via HDMI, something its predecessors wouldn't. Which means all you guys with the new receivers should be looking at this model. I just bought a BD-10 which converts the new codecs to PCM via 7.1 analog to my 4306 - works great.

The BD-50 is suppossed to be the end game. The BD-30 could bitstream all the codecs but could not decode any of them. The BD-50 will be able to bitstream and decode.

I'll believe it when I see it printed, by Panasonic, in specific terms. Then, I might even buy one. :D

Yeah, every source I've read says that the BD50 will both internally decode DTS-MA/TrueHD & output via 7.1 Analog and send Bitstream of DTS-MA/TrueHD via HDMI 1.3.

But like you said, I will believe it when the ACUTAL model comes out and Sound & Vision, Home Theater, Audioholics, and other professional reviewers have examined and confirmed it.

I really cannot wait any longer for this DTS-MA, and I sure don't want to spend $2K on that Denon DVD3800-BD player!:D
