How Much Did You Spend on Your 5.1 Speaker System?

Dude I just noticed your in Ohio. Have you gone to SVS yet in person?
Yep Mazer, I live outside of the Dayton metro area; Trip distance: 255.41 miles Time: 4hrs13mins.

I have contacted SVS and have been invited to tour thier Showroom:D. I have no need to audition the SVS SBS-01 system before buying, heard them at a friends house and was sold over a month ago. I do plan on making the drive though to save on $$$ shipping cost and to take pictures for everyone if allowed:p.

Hi Donald:

A showroom visit is a nice way to meet our Shop Manager, kick the tires on some models and see/hear some speakers, but it’s not set-up at a ‘critical demo room’ (we’ll add one eventually). You can also usually take a peek in the factory where your subwoofer is being built and if the foreman is feeling generous, you might just get a t-shirt or ball-cap out of the deal. :) So don’t feel like you are bothering us if you want to take a look around for a few minutes when you pick-up your order – it’s a fun way to learn more about SVS.

Less than two weeks to go if every thing goes as planned. Which means more likely will have my new system in under 1 month:D.

Ohhhh. The love between you two. You thank him...he thanks you, and whatever else happens stays in Vegas. I get it. :confused:

The point is hyghwayman: You failed to ellucidate that rather simple and plain fact in your op. You do so now, mind you with the aiding and abetting of your cohort. I get it. Believe me, I get it. I'd rather not, as it's not my cup of tea...but to each his own. You guys have at it...it's a free country.

Perhaps you could chime in sooner, hyghwayman, to explain your post to the masses. Your one interrogatory has now morphed into:
1) stories of what you have;
2) how you got your speakers;
3) and the difference a few hundred bucks can make.

Btw: both you and your cohort were here for the first five minutes after I logged on. In fact, you even were in this thread after my last post (# 34). And now you've both disappeared. Together. Again. What's up with that?
:eek:
Johnd,
I'm not sure how to answer this but I will try. In my OP I stated and asked;
She also thinks there is no way a 1k speaker system will sound any different than say a $500.oo or even a $300.oo one . So if I could get some data and personal feedback from HTS members to show my wife just how little I'm wanting to spend to get good sound, maybe she'll understand and then again maybe not.
The personal feedback I wanted was a combo of what members got, how members got it and the difference they made between the speakers they bought and something a little less costly they could have bought. The data I asked for was the $ amount members paid for their systems.

My Canton fronts were $2100 shipped. The Canton center was $400 shipped. The Mordaunt Short surrounds were $350 shipped. I currently have a temp. JBL 12" sub that would be about $250 new.....looking at some passive cylinders.....anyhoo, my current rigs speaks would come in at $3100. FYI the sound quality went up leaps and bounds when I sold my Mordaunt Short 500 fronts and center...which were probably in the $1200-$1500 range. The Mordys were pretty nice speaks......but the extra thousand took me to the next level with the Cantons. HTH. To the SO of the OP. He really needs the better speakers.......people have died for want of SQ...:D;)

I don't think I adequately addressed this point. With all of our old systems, my wife was one of the "Not too loud, it hurts my ears" types. I've recently discovered that her standard volume level for listening enjoyment is louder than my max. She loves her music now more than ever, and boy does she like it loud because it doesn't hurt her ears anymore.

System Price Poll for Reference

hyghwayman,

A recent poll of Audioholics forum members was conducted by Audioholics forum. (I don't know how to link to it, maybe somebody else can) In the poll about 2000 members provide what they spent on their entire systems. Spending $1000 dollars on speakers would probably place your system in roughly the lowest 20% of members. About a third of members spent $9,000 or more on their systems. Hopefully you could show your wife this to prove in comparison to others in the hobby you are not being excessive in wanting to spent $1000 on speakers and a subwoofer.

My HT system is not 5.1, it is 4.0. The speakers were $1800 and the receiver was $350.

Wow is all I can say after reading some of the replies to that poll.
Thanks Exit and Davemcc.

Now I'm not getting any younger and at 42 my number could come up any time. I did show her some of the replies to my ? and she had the nerve to say the wimpy HTiB speakers were fine:eek:, I just need to get my hearing checked:mad:. I tried to argue the point that the wimpy HTiB speakers were mono (1 speaker per box) and that they could never reproduce sound effectivly. Her reply was yeah but there's 5 of them plus the sub. Then went on to say that when our youngest son (14) moves out I could get any speaker system I wanted, I told her by then I could be pushing daisies!

I will get my speakers now not later no matter what the cost, I will dump the wife and buy my speakers and she knows this too! I use to have other hobbies (fishing, camping/hicking, bowling, tennis and billiards) but had to cut back or stop them all together after being rear-ended (Auto Accident) in 2004, that's when I got hooked on HT. So, with that said I want to thank everyone again for all of your support, replies and wisdom.

If it's any help to you I told my wife my PB12+2 ($1,200 shipped) only cost $400 on a special clearance sale and I had no problems. You have to have a credible price that your wife might believe. I thought a real wood box of the size of a PB12+2 would be about $400 like a nice end table. It sounds like she would believe the SVS 5.1 would be an acceptable purchase for about $300. So that is what you tell her. I have a secret checking account which is a payroll deduction of a couple of hundred a month which I use for special purposes, one of them being purchase of audio equipment. The trick is to set this up at the time of your annual raise at work and just divert your raise into it. That way you are not taking money out of an account your wife would see. I have done that for a couple of years now and the account serves as an emergency account for unexpected expenses. Sometimes this is the only way to save money because we all tend to raise our standard of living to match our income. It is easier to divert your raise into a special savings account than to try and take money out the household account, which your wife probably controls and spends..

Getting your hearing checked isn't going to restore your hearing. Once a portion of your hearing is gone, it's gone for good. Getting rid of the wife sounds like a good way to take up your old hobbies again. Fishing for food and camping for shelter. Keeping the wife will enable you to afford much more than killing her, I mean getting rid of her. Sorry , that just slipped out. :D

Part II Clearance Pricing and Secret Acct.

hyghwayman.

I had to leave for a meeting and didn't get to finish the concept.

When you set up a secret account, have the bank receipts sent to you at your work. Also, don't forget to remove the packing receipt on the delivered item. Get a debit card for the checking account and you can expedite on-line shopping. If she questions you on where you got the money say you have been saving $20 a week for __ weeks. This method is a lot easier than getting hassled about buying a piece of audio gear or taking money from the family budget. You can also be a hero by comming up with a couple of thousand dollars extra savings for a dental or vet bill, or a used car for one of the kids. Of course then you have to disclose that you had a special savings account set up so there would be emergency money available. Still she probably will be grateful for the extra money and not ask to many more questions.

In essence, know thy wife and her values. If your purchase exceeds her expectations, then lower the stated purchase price to meet her expectations and pay for it on a credit or debit card which lists your work address for biling. No fuss, no muss. Clean and simple.
Who has a wife that would go to the trouble to look up the price of audio gear on the internet.

I guessed my wife would accept $400 as a reasonable purchase for a big speaker, but there is no way my wife or kids would find the $1,200 price of a PB12+2 acceptable and I would never hear the end of it if I bought it without my wife's consent. Thus tell them what they want to hear.

Upgradeitis

hyghwayman,

Just one more thing. Most Audioholics suffer from upgradeitis. You most likely will want to replace other parts of your system over time. Using a secret checking account and skimming off annual raises will put you in a position to buy future purchases, so it is worth a thought to set this system up.
