Well, I think I caught the bug, I bought a 661 receiver from the AH store and a complete Klipsch Reference 5.1 . The sound is absolutely inceredible, but there is a problem with the picture that has me stumped. So here is my layout to clarify:

Wii
|------661------HP 42" Plasma
XBOX

Right now EVERYTHING is hooked up via composite cables. Now here is where it gets weird. I checked and double checked and everything seems to be in its place. When I play full screen DVDs through the XBOX, the screen starts to skew back and forth kind of like an old tuner TV would out of reception . When I play widescreen DVDs it is fine. I have read the manual and tried the following:

-bypass the 661 and the DVDs play fine so it's not the xbox

-Disconnected and removed all the speakers(though maybe it was some kind of weird magnetic field problem)

-Tried turning on AND off the video conversion on the OSD menu

I will contact AH store and see if they can help, but i was wondering what some of you gurus on here can make of it????????

I'm a total newb so please use small words and bright pictures lol

It is hard to speculate at long range. You have only provided sketchy details. Now composite is not HD. I suspect there is a resolution conflict somewhere. Composite video is the lowest grade connection, so you need to make sure the TV and DVD player are set to 480i. If the resolutions all match, are you sure you have a video composite cable? They have yellow plugs. If it is the correct cable with the right bandwidth, then try another cable as you might have a defective one.

doh, i meant to say component cables...............

Like I said, Widescreen discs play just fine. It's the fullscreen discs that are giving me crap. The TV reads the input as 480p. I assume the 661 is just passing that signal right??????????

I can't download the Yamaha manual without registering. I don't want to do that because they will spam me.

However your unit is new. The unsatisfactory people in Hollywood don't really want us using HD analog connections any more, such as component video. Recently a lot of road blocks have been put in the way. They want HDMI connections only, because it has draconian DRM. I have a feeling that if you switch to HDMI your problems will resolve.

Funny you should mention that. The guy at radio shack kept insisting I buy banana plugs to which I replied " can't I just stick the wire straight in the receiver?" After messing around in a cramped space fumbling with the wires and the nuts to hold them in place, I really wished I had the banana plugs. I think you may be on to something. Regardless, I have read the manual and will read it again tonight after I'm done studying. The nature of the problem just seems really strange. Even stranger, not only do the widescreen discs play fine, the XBOX menu screen in full screen is working fine. It's just the fullscreen discs

Where do banana plugs come into this equation?

These are HDMI cables.

Do you have another old DVD player laying around (I have about 5 of them) that you could put in place of the Xbox and try playing a fullscreen disc through it? It sure sounds like you are describing macrovision copy protection effects. If fullscreen works with a regular DVD player then you'll know the Xbox is to blame.

Well, I bypassed the 661 and plugged the component straight to the TV and it worked fine. This is how I had it hooked up before the 661 and never had problem 1. I will try that tomorrow although I don't have extra component cables lying around
