No sound out of new subwoofer. Help?

I've not been able to get any sound out of my new subwoofer. I bought a Dayton SUB-120 from parts express.

I've tried with both my receiver and a laptop using a 3.5 mm to RCA adapter, and I can't get any sound out. Below is a picture of it. What could I be doing wrong?

Does it power one? Do you have the AVR set up for the LFE or sub "yes"?

The green PWR light on the back of it comes on. I've followed the User's Manual for my AVR for setting up a subwoofer. Just to be sure, I tried connecting it to my laptop, and still got no sound out of it.

OK, time to take it apart and check your speaker wires from the amp to the woofer. And while your taking the woofer out, hook it up to your left or right main just to see if ANYTHING comes out of it.

Please give that a try.

What is required to void Dayton's warranty? If taking it apart is on there, I would not do that. You never know if it isn't a simple wire problem.

thats what you should start with is the settings more than likely thats were the problem would be(most components are checked onthe factory level and are in working order when the leave0, with your laptop what output did you use, and did you use the laptop first?

I used my AVR first. When I went through the manual for my AVR to make sure I'm doing everything right (and I was) I then thought something might be wrong with the AVR so I tried the laptop. I use the headphone output on my laptop, using a splitter that goes from 3.5mm to two RCA jacks and plugged it into the woofer.

I'd post a picture but I'm not allowed to yet.

Is the Gain knob turned up?

SheepStar
Yes, all the way. So is the frequency knob.

I thought it was a kit sub, sorry if its not. I've taken the woofers out of subs and speakers since 1982. How old are you again sheep? Pre school didn't have a Fischer-Price screw driver set?

Don't try me like Craigsub. Don't dumb down the OP's problem either.

turn it down just in case. Post the settings, if you have pre outs for your mains, try feeding it thru them.

I have tested the output from the laptop and it does work.

You might need to hook your main speakers into the speaker level in for testing. What kind of receiver do you have?

My receiver is a Sony STR-DG510. It has a subwoofer out. But shouldn't it still work with RCA Inputs?

It should. Just keep trying different RCA cables from Sony to sub, and I'll go do some research...Be right back.

OK, your receiver has sound calibration, so you need to get into the menu, set your mains to small (if an option), crank up the sub gain in the receiver, set the Sony crossover to 80Hz for now, AND turn your sub gain down all the way.

Playing your favorite rave or rap cd (oh dear), turn the gain up on the sub till you feel and hear bass. If this doesn't work, I'm on my way with a Mossburg 500 pump, and an Onkyo 605. The 12 gauge is for your sony the Onkyo is to replace it

If you know you have output on the RCA cables leading into the sub, then that sub is a dud.

Must be bunk.

I would write to Dayton and ask if removing the plate amp will void the warranty.

Gimply,

Relax, I wasn't implying anything, just saying that if it voids the warranty, that would not be a great idea. But guilty until proven innocent right?

I agree. I've not had much sleep, so I've been in rare form today. Peace All!
