I have a question about this receiver. I know nothing about watts per channel etc. Anyway, I'm not using this as a surround sound. I have two tower speakers 150 watt each, I want to add a sub woofer but have no clue what I should be looking at or the watts it can handle. 120 watts per channel now does that mean you can t go over that watt per speaker? As for a sub woofer I've noticed there are powered ones with their own control and just plain ones where you just hooke up the wires and thats it. Can someone please give me some guidance at to what to look for in a sub woofer. Thanks a bunch.:)

Ok, the receiver puts out wattage, or rather gives it to the speakers. If a speaker is specified to handle 150 watts RMS that means it can handle that much power, that doesn't mean it will take 150 watts from your receiver and break the receiver. If you connected a speaker that could handle 1000 watts to the 120 watt per channel Pioneer the receiver wouldn't break just because the speaker's power handling is so high.

Now you are searching for a subwoofer. I replied to your other thread, but I will explain more here. Subwoofers have built in amplifiers, so all the power they will need will come from the built in amplifier. The receiver will give the subwoofer a signal from the subwoofer preoutput (which is an RCA jack) it's much like an output from a source. It can be used with any active subwoofer, whether the subwoofer is 50 watts or 500 watts. So you can get the biggest baddest subwoofer you want and get awesome thunderous bass, or you can get the tiniest little subwoofer you want for..... what would you do with a tiny subwoofer anyway?:D

No active subwoofer will "kick" your receiver out or overload it, it's just not possible. The power of the subwoofer is not related to the receiver in any way.

what subwoofer did you get, how is it connected to the receiver. Be sure you connected the subwoofer to the subwoofer preout, not the multichannel input which also says subwoofer next to it (easy mistake to make). Go through the simple setup and set it to 5.1 (assuming you have 5 speakers and a subwoofer connected). Make sure double bass or LFE+main is set up correctly. Refer to your users manual for details on how to get to these setup features.:)

Hi Seth,
I got the Dayton 12"power sub. Before I got your message, I went out to one our audio stores and they said I needed the y cable to plug into red and white. I have it plugged in right to the receiver. So I did that and put yes to sub, it didnt work but when I put sub plus on it worked. I called parts express and they said it should of worked with one line, then they said I had a bad cable which I'm still using cable I just put the y on the end of it not unless one of the ends was bad dont know but it is working. I didnt do what you said now will it hurt anything the way I got it hooked up? I will paste and copy what you said to do because I've never done that, alls I've done is put front -large , centre-no, surr-no, subw-plus. The LFE was set to recommendation of manual.
And then I adjusted the crossover to 80 hz on receiver, on sub I put freq to 180hz and the gain at about 1 oclock. And yes it vibrates the floor and I love it. Thanks to you guys helping me out. :)

You just didn't have the settings on the receiver quite right. I would set your fronts to small btw, and set the x-over around 80 hz on the receiver as well as set the x-over on the subwoofer to the maximum setting, which it looks like you did already.

There was nothing wrong with your cable from the start from the sound of it.:)

Good to hear it's up and running.

When I set the speakers to small, I couldnt find the subwoofer setting, when I put the setting back to large then the subwoofer setting came back,so I dont know, it says in manual when you put speakers to small then it automatically changers the sub to a yes but I could nt see that. But like I said nothing would work with out the y cable. So the way I have is ok then? Everyone thanks again for all your help I had no idea where to begin to look about what to get for a sub or anything so I based my purchase on what yous said so again thanks so much.

Can you still access the x-over on the receiver when the fronts are set to small? The receiver is omitting the "yes" and "subwoofer plus" from your options because they are default to on. The reason, because it knows your speakers are set to small you need the subwoofer to augment the bass. The receiver is just doing what's logical and practical.

Yes I can exccess the cross over with the front speakers set to small, its working like you just said, theres alot of trial and error on my part since I dont know anything about my receiver to many buttons. What do you mean augment the bass. when speakers on small its sends bass to the sub? I've been playing around with the cross over, I have it at 150, I'm not sure what the cross over freq does, it almost sounds louder the bass, on the sub the gain dial I know if you adjust that it gives you deeper bass. I've been looking at other stuff in manual for receiver like channel level, that isnt set, its just at 0 dB for what I'm using it for do I really need to touch that? if I do need to adjust what does it do? Just noticed, when watching tv, and listening through stero the sub isnt coming on. The other speakers are working, why would this be happening? Thanks

thanks

ok got sub working with tv must of been connection on back of receiver, question about effect/chsel , I listen to moives with vir surround since I only have the two tower speakers and sub, so I can adjust L,R,SW on effect/chsel
I put the sw at +7.5db seems to give it more bass, the L,R I've left at O.Odb what does the effect/chsel do? so is it like setting the volume per speaker?

The x-over adjusts where the front speakers will start to roll off (stop playing lower frequencies) and where the subwoofer picks up where the fronts left off. Setting the x-over around 80 if you have full size speakers is usually about right. If you have it set to 150 and it sounds like you are getting more bass it's because the subwoofer's output at higher bass frequencies is higher than it's lowest onces. Setting the x-over to around 100 or 80hz will make the subwoofer less localizable (it won't draw attention to itself). If the bass is exclusively low you will hear bass, but won't be able to necessarily determine where it's coming from just from the sound.

Yes, they are gain settings. You have the output gain for the subwoofer set 7.5 db over the fronts. That doesn't mean it is louder than your fronts, as the level adjustment on the subwoofer factors in as well. Have you used the MCACC calibration with supplied microphone? The goal in most home theaters is to have the sound be consistant and as balanced as possible. Some people like exaggerated bass, and will set the subwoofer to go much louder than other speakers. That drives me bonkers honestly, but it's your system.:D

Ok so I set cross over to 80-100 and leave alone. If I want the bass deeper do I just adjust gain dial on sub? No I havent used the cal mic set up I was kinda looking at that today and wasnt sure if I should go there lol!!!!! where I have sub I dont think the mic would pic it up I have it on floor at the side of couch facing wall so the sub isnt facing the way I'm sitting does that matter?
I'm probably driving you nuts with all these questions.

Where the subwoofer is shouldn't matter. I would at least give the MCACC a try. Do what sounds best to you, not what sounds best to me. If you want exaggerated bass, that's fine. Everyone has different tastes. Don't be out to please us audio junkies, please your own ears.;)

I do like bass, so adjusting the cross will bring out the bass sound? I just want to do was is right since I dont know anything about this stuff,so setting the cross at 150 was ok? I will try the mic thing and see how that goes as long as I dont have a cat meowing lol!!!!!but I do like to hear the bass enough to know that is there, but not that it is overpowering either. What is the better way of adjusting the bass at the dial on the sub gain or the cross over? ok I just did the mic thing. it changed the front speakers to large so I changed it back to small. The macc lite is on receiver should I be turning it off or did it set it up that way?
I checked the effect/chsel and it changed it alot L -4.5,R-5.0,sw-10.0. So if I want alittle more bass what should I adjust? It actually doesnt sound to bad. ok manual says the mcacc indicator lights when acoustic calibration eq is on(acoustic calibration eq is automatically set to all ch adjust after the auto mcacc setup or eq auto setup. So when I turn receiver off the mcaa indicator light is still on so I'm asuming this needs to be on then???? When I did the mic then I set the mic at ear level in the middle of the room, was I suppose to bring it back to where I was sitting because it didnt specify?
