GIK 242/244, how many and where?

Hello all. I would like to get just a little more input before purchasing more room treatments. I have had some assistance on the Home Theater Shack website already:D I am wondering how many of the 242 and/or 244 panels I need and where they should be placed. So far, I have 2 of the GIK TriTraps and will soon be purchasing 2 more to stack on top of the others in my front corners due to my 10' ceilings. Thanks for your input and suggestions!

My post on the Home Theater Shack site includes photos of my den. I tried to place a link here so the photos could be seen, but I haven't had enough posts here yet to be allowed to post a link (sorry). I have the same user name on that site, so you may be able to find my post if you look for me there. It is under Home Theater Installation and Systems-Home Audio Acoustics-Recommendations for Room Treatment Needed-Please Help!

You should be bouncing all your questions off Glenn or Bryan at GIK. They will give you excellent advice and do not oversell you!
I expect they will be chipping in here any moment :D:D

Highly recommended...

i gotta second what the previous poster said. I sent a photo or two of my place to them and they made excellent recommendations for me, without selling stuff I didn't need or wouldn't see much improvement from.

Highly recommended

Thanks for you replies, guys. Yes, I have seen this diagram. Of course, the setup in my den is not like this.:( The placement of the HT and seating is asymmetrical and I have a couple of large openings to other areas. The room is fairly large (17' X 23') but because of the location of the fireplace and openings, I have no other options for placement of HT and furnishings. Not an easy space to figure out how to treat. Sorry that I could not post the room pics here or a link yet, but I will after I satisfy the minimum number of posts! I did get a couple of recommendations from Bryan on Home Theater Shack and was hoping for more input from this site. I have acted on a couple of his suggestions already and have purchased a larger area rug and have ordered blackout drapes for the rear windows. The rug looks great and I can tell the room echo has been decreased a little. Can't wait to get the drapes!

Just email GIK your pictures from front of room, side view and rear view. I have a difficult open room two and all they said all I could do secondary to room layout and WAF was to use the panels hehind the speakers, panels at the first reflection point and one panel or pillar in my only corner of the room.

Greg, your GIK elites look very nice! How would you compare the sound in your room before and after adding the treatments? Are those 242's or 244's?

Also, I see your Ready Acoustics panels. I have never seen these before, but they are very attractive! Exactly what Ready Acoustics products are these? Did you replace them with the GIK's? If so, how do the two products compare?

Thanks,
roakes

They are GIK Elites. The Elites are 242's but use a 4'' frame with a 2'' airgap which makes them as effective as a 4'' panel such as the 244. Room treatments were by far the best upgrade I have ever made. Before the treatments, loud music just jumbled all together and was quite unpleasant and after the music is tight, more seperated and detailed.

Read this little review on the Ready Acoustic frames. It was my first attempt at a DIY panel and they turned out really good. The GIK panels outclass the RAs in my room so I am going with all GIK Elites at this point. They are now offering the Elites in a black piano gloss and I am getting those.

Greg, is the black piano gloss a new frame finish for the Elite's?

Yep, it seems that generally those guys at Home Theater Shack aren't very helpful or nearly as knowledgeable as the good people here! ;)

Welcome to Audioholics.

Does anyone on this forum have experience in stacking the GIK TriTraps? I will be purchasing a second set to stack on my first set. My ceiling is 10' high, so the TriTraps will not fill up the corners from floor to ceiling. Does it matter if the untreated space is at the top or the bottom of the corners? There will be a gap of approximately 2'. Also, are there any tricks for neatly stacking the TriTraps for best appearance and functionality?

Thanks,
roakes

Stacking Tri Traps is easy - they just sit on each other. As to high or low, generally a room already has a decent amount of absorbtion low in the room (furniture, carpet, people) so getting them up higher is a more efficient use of the same amount of absorbtion.

Gloss is in fact a new finish for the Elites. We introduced it as an option on the new Pillar absorber and decided to also offer it on the 242 Elites.
