Cheap Old Bookshelves

I'm in need of a cheap set of bookshelf speakers for my woodshop. They'll be driven by an 80 wpc Yamaha RX-596 stereo receiver. If I were to go on Ebay and search for some old speakers for around $50-$75, what would be my best choices.

Thanks,

John

Any of the Boston A-series from the '80s (particularly the A40s or A60s) would sound great. Altec-Lansing also made some great bookshelves in that era.

Some old Celestion bookshelf speakers or something from ADC would also be good. I will second the Boston Acoustics recommendation. I am enjoying my Boston Acoustics HD10s I got for $70 a lot.:D

An old pair of Cerwin Vega AT series floorstander wouldn't work?

You can find them on Craigslist, E-Bay sometimes for under $150. My thinking is you would get better sound.

While I would never consider CVs for any sort of critical listening, I agree that they would be good enough for a workshop.

I really need to keep them up off the floor in the shop. A 20x20 shop with a half done 15' sailboat doesn't leave much room. However, I could probably mount the floorstanders on the wall some how. Would that kill the sound? Actually, after reading about The Speaker Company (read my post soon to be in that thread) I'm thinking about going with their larger bookshelf at $89.

I'd consider placing a bid on one of these babies:

Infinity Primus

There seems to be a surplus of these on ebay, so it might increase your chances of a winning bid within your price range.

You could also shoot for the JBL Monitors (I removed this JBL line from my HT system, but for your needs it would probably work great)

JBL Monitor 2-way 5"
