New Paradigm Subs

While I don't have any info on that particular sub, I do own a full line of the Paradigm Studios. I am curious why you are considering that model. Have you considered any ID (Internet Direct) companies like SVS or HSU?

I went to a local well respected audio store (Signature Audio & Video - http://www.sigav.com/) here in Ottawa that carries the full line of Paradigm speakers and subs and spoke to one of their sales people and he said this sub sounds great and is selling very well. It wasn't hooked up so I will be going back so I have a chance to hear what it sounds like.

I have considered SVS and HSU except they don't sell their subs locally and I would really like to hear the sound before making a purchase. Signature also carries Velodyne subs and I was wondering what you and other members of this forum think of them.

HSU for sure has distributors in Canada, and I believe SVS does also. Aside from Paradigm's top subs, none of their lower models was really worth the price. I haven't had a chance to hear the new ones though.... Trust me, you don't need to question whether or not either of these brands are good, because you haven't heard good if you haven't heard either of them...

Both Paradigm and Velodyne make some great subs but not until you get pretty high on the food chain. If you want to know what one of the better SVS or Hsu's sound like tell your dealer to let you listen to the servo 15 or DD 15. In the end, you will save a ton of money by using the ID companies for a sub that is every bit as good as the very expensive top end Paradigm or Velo.

as far a velo goes, i think you'll find must members here like their upper end products, and for their less expensive products, there are better subs for the buck. My one knock on velo is that they had a none issues with the hgs(precursor to the dd) line and refused to address it, i had my amp replaced once in warranty and once out(twice in 6years). The latter is the current amp and is exhibiting signs of the original failure, when i contacted velo i was "given" a lesson in subs, which was smoke as to the problem.(told me i was probably playing the sub to load, crossover might be set wrong, certian sources will cause my issues, none of which was applicable). Sorry for the drawn out rant....Having said that I love the sub! super tight for a 10.

Canadian Distributer

Sonic Boom is a Canadian reseller and distributer for SVS in Canada.

I also read a rumor that HSU was no longer available up there through distributors.
Another Canadian manufacturer is Axiom and their Canadian prices are less than the US site.

With the current value of the Canadian dollar, it might be worth a drive across the border to pick up a high end sub.

My Room Size

My room size it 11 x 17 and half of one wall is open to our eating area. What size sub would be recommended. Please include subs from HSU, SVS, Paradigm, Velodyne and Axiom Epic.

I have a rom similar in size now, 12X18X8 and I just bought a SVS 20-39PCi and its great!

Moving in two weeks to 14X22X8 room, and it should work there too

Any restriction on physical size of the sub? A VTF-2 Mk3 or SVS PB-12 (or 20-39PCi) should do very well in a room that size.

I've been in the Signature Audio Video in Stittsville myself, its where I picked up my Velodyne DD-15. I talked with a few of the guys there, before they sent a guy who was very knowledgable to deal with me, I guess they gathered I was a bit more informed then the average electronics consumer. Anyways I spent a good 3 hours or more in there talking with this guy and testing out some equipment. In the end, I ended up buying the VSX-94TXH Pioneer Elite receiver and the Velodyne DD-15. I got a huge discount on the Velo from them because they had used it previously as one of their theatre room demonstration pieces, and I haven't regretted the purchase at all. I have it in a pretty bad spot (due to room layout constraints) and the room is 12x14x8. With one side of the room opened up for a little main door entrance, a stair case and another adjoining doorway to a hall. Even with all of this, the calibration equipment included with the Velo had my optimized in roughly no time at all. The sub is quite powerful, and can easily shake my house down if I turned it up.

I mightve gone with something else had I done more research before hand, but all things considered, I felt the Velo integrated better with the Studio's that I have then the Servo 15 did.

At the end of the day I thought Signature AV was a really good store, good service, and great follow-up. They called me up, a couple hours after I purchased equipment to make certain my drive back to Petawawa went good, and that I had no problems with the equipment. Then they called me up again at the end of the week, just to confirm all was good.

My Budget

My budget is about $500.00 before taxes. I would only be buying one sub as I don't want to blow out any of my windows

I sent an email to HSU about Canadian distributors and they didn't respond (it has been two days).

I think I am going to make a decision between the following:

SVS PB10-NSD
HSU VTF-2 MK3
Paradigm DSP 3100
Velodyne (not sure which model yet)

I own both SVS and Paradigm Subs. I have the paradigm in a room thats a littel smaller than yours. I have the PS-1000, and it has amazing bass. For a bigger room you would probably need a bigger woofer or amp at least. I use the SVS PB-10ISD in a bigger room with open walls and vaulted ceiling (crap acoustics).

My svs is still a 10'' but can produce much louder and lower bass than the paradigm. It also weighs about more than the paradigm and is physically bigger.

You dont want a huge sub in a room that size. Also the SVS comes in different colors which is nice, because i needed a white sub to be unnoticed in a the corner.

Overall i think the paradigm sounded better with music than the svs...just my observation. The PS-1000 i have is an older version, and it seems like the new has a bigger amplifier (175 RMS vs 225 RMS) but its a tad smaller and 2 lbs lighter.. so i bet it sounds the same or even better.
