What is it with the member rankings?

I dont get it, help me out........

Is there a way to turn this goofy feature off? It just is a bit silly and pointless and dumbs everything down.

Which rankings? The ones by your name? No, you cannot change it.

Don't see how it dumbs things down myself, a lot of people that post here get a laugh out of it, we are not so serious about our audio equipment that we cannot enjoy a laugh at ourselves.

If a professor at MIT stands before you giving a lecture on quantum physics is the subject matter any less informative should he be wearing slacks pulled up to high with suspenders, his hair dishevled and thick bottle glasses?

Does Don Cherry's Hockey Night in Canada critiques any less informed because he wears outlandish suits?

Does this have anything to do with your post in my thread "I am Samurai"? Anything at all? Hmmm? C'mon now, chadnliz, it's really not all that complicated. You've been around the block once or twice. :)

For guy's with a bazzillion posts like me & some others it really dont mean all that much but it does give a newb some kind of idea that the advice he is getting is from a person who is being judged by his "peers" so to say, once your here for a while you will see the value of the ranking system, what I THINK its best for is weeding out the a-holes who constantly start trouble.

You can leave feedback by clicking on the little scales on the right, enough bad feedbacks for ignorant reply's & the members chicklet will turn red & pretty much say he's a troll.

I personally dont hand out red's but ive seen guys who deserved the red they ended up with, none of which visit any more now that their chicklet says their a troll :D

Thanks highfi. That was a lucid, comprehesive, well-thought post.

I was just going to tell the op that Samurais and all ranks above get to tell Interns what to do. But you've just sucked all the fun out of that, haven't you? :p:p I'm signing off. A good night to all.

OK first to a guy I never met....no it wasnt about you....... Bonzai!!!
Second HIFIHoney makes a good point, but that is also my problem with the whole thing, what if a newB comes here and gets some info from a guy he trusts because of his "tittle", meanwhile its a 20 yr old kid with HTIB in his bedroom that has posted 100 times about the Star Wars franchise......I think it lends cred to many who simply should have little if any.

I think you are over-thinking this whole thing. Anyone giving bogus information is usually called out on that really quickly.

Anyone handing over their lifes fortune to this 20 year old kid with a few green dots by his name had greater issues then just blindly attributing faith to a function of a forum.

100 Posts about Star Wars doesn't mean "he" doesn't know jack about sound. George Lucas could probably quite easily write many thousands of posts with regard to Star Wars and it was his company Lucasfilm with Tomlinson Holman that developed THX.

Regardless, why continue on with this farce? Nothing on this forum is about to change because of random pointless speculation. Why does it really bother you so much?

I doubt I will loose sleep over this, I am just posting a thought I had, did I break some sort of rule?

No of course not. I'm just curious why you are so vehement to see a perfectly unimportant feature on the forum go. It is intended as another form of interaction on the forums, not some device to lure the unwary into a trap. I hope you don't lose any sleep over it either, its just green dots, a silly title, and a post counter. Totally benign.

Well, if you're such a guy (the fooler or the fool), there's enough of us here to get the thread back on track, and to offer some meaningful insight.

But that's not what you asked, is it? And you started this thread immediately after posting a satirical comment in my thread in the vent.

Either way, if your concern is that you may be fed a lot of bad information here, worry not. This is a credible site with many knowledgeable members, and some of them are "20 years old." And if a thread ever becomes full of nonsense and misinformation (rarely, if ever), it is quickly brought back to reality. This is a good site, good mods, with regular moderating and with many skilled, experienced, knowledgeable members.

"Bonzai?" What's that?

There is no way to turn it off. It is silly but that's the point.
They use to have a Couch Potato ranking. :D I loved that one. What's so dumb about it? The real deal is the little green squares. ;) Stick around for a little bit and you'll be able to tell who's who. Different guys are good for different things. My 1 green square should tell you that I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed.

I think that's what you want us all to think Alex. :p

Yeah, not that I have any more right here than anyone else (I'm sure some would say I have absolutely no right here :p), but this guy barges (steps lightly) in here wanting to change the world in his second month...on a meaningless tool. :p Forget about it chad...it really means nothing, other than a name signifying your post count. That's all.

An Audio God in the making. :)

My point is that Seth isn't talking out his a$$. His info, according to all that, is good. The Spartan thing just is what it is.

See?

I have always liked the ranking system myself. I liked the audioholic couch potato title, too. I think they are meant to be funny, so I have had no problem with it. One question I have had for a while is whether there is a list of post count to ranking title? (For example, audiophyte = _number of posts, audioholic = _number of posts, audioholic ninja= _ number of posts, etc) Is there a list like that?
