Ok, I started a thread in the beginner section on what I'm trying to achieve so no need to repost it here.

I've narrowed my choices down and here they are:
Yamaha V661 New in the box
Yamaha V1600 Open box display model, no remote, no manual

All things considered, which would you pro audio folk prefer? They would roughly be the same price.

This will be the beginning of me piecing my system together, and I can't wait to get started so any input is appreciated.

I will be buying either one tonight!!!!!!!!

The RX-V1600 is a very nice receiver, and you can get the manual online, which you will need to properly set it up, and you will definitely need the remote for it too... I'm sure you can get one on ebay easy enough though. However it doesn't pass 1080p, it only supports up to 1080i, and only 5.1 PCM via HDMI, although it can do 7.1 with analog inputs... besides that it's a fantastic reciver, it's what I used to have before I got my RX-V1800.

The manual can easily be printed on-line and for Comparison a remote for my Yamaha music server cost $100. However, a Harmony remote can also be puchased for less than $100 that will control everything after programming on their web-site. If the savings exceed $100, I'd go for the open box.

Well, They are about equal in price. I don't think the 1600 comes with the YPAO either, it's just the receiver. I've never dialed in one of these things.

I thought the 1600 did pass HDMI????? I'm not looking for upconvert, just something to bring it down to one output to the TV

whats the budget?
My total initial budget is 1,000. Either one of the receivers can be mine for under 400. I fig that leaves some room to start with some nice speakers. That will be my next deal to figure out :)

Well I bit the bullet and bought the 661. I hope I made the right choice. There is just something about me being the first to open the box that gives me peace of mind. Thanks AH Store for a sweet deal!!!!!!!!!!! Now that I have the receiver, I need to find some speakers and a dvd all while staying under my 1,000 budget!!!!! Looks like I have about 625 left to spend:)

That's the smart choice. I think you'll really enjoy that receiver. When shopping for speakers, keep in mind the higher the sensitivity level, the more efficient your receiver will work. It's much easier on a receiver to drive 5 - 8 ohm speakers with a 94dB rating, compared to 5 - 4 ohm speakers rated at 88dB. One doesn't need a 50lb. flagship AVR to have outstanding output in a large room if they match their speakers up properly to their receiver. Just something to keep in mind. In a week or so, you'll be seeing the HD-A3 for $100 which makes for a great upconverting DVD player, as well as a great HD DVD player. That should hold you over until Blu ray decides to drop their prices a bit so more can afford their technology. $399 for a PS3 is still out of a lot of budgets.

Congrats on your new receiver!
