unequal noise using Project Debut turntable

I think I've narrowed down a problem to my turntable, I get a background noise only on my right speaker when playing Vinyl, I've tried 2 different amps (sony, Rotel RA-921) and 2 set's of speakers (Sony, B&W DM302). same symptom on all setups !

if I set the amp to take audio from my PC, the speakers are perfect so I'm sure it's the Table.

It's not a cracking or a humming but just white noise, not really sure how to describe it better than that. I'm new to setting up a system.

I've grounded the turntable and I'm using pretty good quality cable with banana connectors, I only have a couple of old records to test at the moment, they might not even be stereo recordings I'm not certain (Glenn Miller) the background noise is less with one of the records on the right speaker but still distinctive especially when you throw balance from left to right.

I assume this is a connection issue, or poor grounding somewhere, should I dismantle the stylus / cartridge or could it be the interconnect between table and phono in on the Amp ? I picked up this table from Ebay so I need to assess if it's broken or just needs some adjustment.

any help would be appreciated

Send it back. Most likely the cartridge is faulty and needs to be replaced. But it could be a host of other things as well - tone arm wiring, tone are geometry - you name it.

Is the level of noise coming from teh right speaker consistent with both records or is it more apparent on one than the other? I'd go buy a used LP and if the sound is still there, then you have a legit problem.

a.) Does your sony and rotel have phono inputs or are you running the output of the TT thru a phono pre-amp?
b.) Have you calibrated the tracking force and the aniskate?

Can you take the table to a dealer and see if you can reproduce the problem there? If so, you just may have a worn stylus or bad cartridge.

I don't think its a grounding issue if the noise is just thru one speaker.

It's more apparent on one of the records, so I will be checking on a third LP over the weekend.

Both amps had phono inputs, and I haven't calibrated anything yet.

I'm going to try and find a dealer but as I only paid £50 for the table, I imagine any service charge would way exceed this and therefor be pointless !

I may get hold of a Ortofon 2M Red if this cartridge turns out to be bad.

Calibrate 1st. Eliminate all of the things you can do yourself 1st. It does sound like a stylus/cartridge problem to me too but calibrate just the same and remove that variable from the lis of possibilities

ok, I'll try calibrating, is it something I could likely do myself ? I didn't get any instructions with it.

I've just figured out I'm missing the parts required to set up anti skate !! ie the counter weight and a little piece of string. I assume this would cause undue pressure or lack there of on one of the channels.

presumably my right channel is getting too much pressure or too little as no counter force is acting on the arm to stop it pulling into the center ? could this be what's causing my background noise on the right speaker ?

Its hard to say not knowing what shape the LP is. I'm guessing no. What I think it would do is play one channel louder than the other but I don't think it would be noise.

I guess your next step is to find a Project dealer and get them to order in the anti-skate device.

Yeah I've order it, cost £10

Meanwhile I need to find out how much that counter weight actually weighs so I can fashion a similar one out or bluetack to test if that is the problem.

I can't find it on the spec sheets !

I'm considering upgrading the stylus to a Ortofon OM20 once I've sorted this channel problem

I don't know how much it weighs either.
