BDP-1400 Doesn't Play Live Free, Die Hard BD

Is there something special about this movie, or did I just get a messed up disc?

The player acts like it is about to load the disc, then it just sits there blank. I updated the firmware tonight and it still did it. It plays other discs just fine.

It was a rental from Blockbuster, so I just took it back, but they didn't have another copy. No scratches on the disc either...

Any ideas?

It could have been either. Most likely the player. The Samsungs just seem to really be fickle. I bought a BD-UP5000 based on the reviews and hype thiniking it would be the end all player...NOT. With it being a duo player, an ehternet port, profile 1.1 (via firmware update soon), promises of all the lossless audio and everything, how could you go wrong?

Well, you could, because it won't play half the time. Just look at the threads on AVS for all the details. LFoDH is one that half the players would play out of the box and half would not. Most of them do now, after the update released this week, but some still do not. I got mine to play out of the box, but had to go through hoops to get it to play. You may have to do the same with your 1400. If it didn't play, some had luck with ejecting the disc and reinserting it. Some had to eject, power off, power back on and reinsert the disc. There was just no rhyme or reason to the madness, just keep working with it and somehow, sometimes it would start playing

Iv'e had better luck with my 5000 than most, but it has trouble hooking up via HDMI and still won't play Mr. Woodcock on BD, no matter what, even after the update. My suggestion is if you want to try it again, to try powering off and back on a couple of times removing the disc each time and or ejecting and reinserting the disc to see if it will play. If not, you could try another disc as you could have gotten a bad one (although I know you will have to go to another store).

As for my 5000, if they don't come out with another firmware update to take care of these playability problems by the end of the month (my return window) it's going back. They promise an update to fix the lack of bitstreaming the lossless audio...in May but I don't know. The current update did fix it where I could watch 3:10 to Yuma though. Yay. I'm bitter as I really wanted to love this player. I just can't right now.

Well that sucks. So the only thing I can really do with this player is wait for an update that will allow the disc to play?

I tried loading it a few times, after power down, opening and closing the tray to get it to reload. Same result.

You could try another disc, but my bet is on the player

Unless they get off their butts quick and get an update to at least fix the playability problems!

Do you think it was a matter of rushing the product so they could take advantage of the dual market? Or is it just a piece of s**t and more time wouldn't matter much? That player was being touted as the end-all be-all to the format war... it's shocking to hear that it's having so many problems. Shocking mainly b/c Samsung generally makes high quality products, and because if the format war was still going full-force that player could have cornered the market.

My humble opinon, and just that as Samsung would never tell, is that they rushed it to market. Someone here (or AVS, but I think here) said that the Korean mindset is to be the first to market a product, whether it is fully funtional or not. They don't care if you have to work out a few bugs, just be the first to come out with it. Therin lay the bragging rights.

That said, I don't entirely blame Samsung for all the issues. They are using a Broadcom chipset that had reportedly not been fully developed. You could blame Broadcom as much as Samsung, I believe. They may have sold Sammy a bill of goods with the promise to have it fully funtioning and not come through. Because Sammy has been touting this player since last CES with more than one promise release date, they probably felt pressure to get it out. It's wierd that the first firmware update released last week was version 1.0 Many on AVS seem to think we early adopters were their beta testers. Samsung themselves said that the first shipment in Dec was a soft release with the official release coming this month.

It looks like that may be true, as CC and BB now have them advertised for the first time in their weekly ad and many stores seem to now have them where they have been scarce as hen's teeth to this point.

Yeah, I was waiting on this player for quite some time as I believed it to be the real ticket. Buying this player would isolate you from the war and with the Reon upconversion, SD would look great also. Throw in profile 1.1 and all the lossless audio codec processing, how could you go wrong? Oddly enough, Samsung showed two new duo players at CES this year, the 5500, which is basically a stripped down version of the 5000 (no Reon processing, no 7.1 anolog output, etc) that is supposed to decode all the audio goodies out of the box and the 6500 which is the full featured model to take the place of the 5000. The 5500 is due out in May and the 6500 in Q4. We'll see. If it's anything like the 5000, it'll be Sept for the 5500 and Feb '09 for the 6500...if they come out at all.

The outcome of the Warner decision with more possible defections may determine if the new players come out, especially the 6500. Time will tell. Since the 5500 uses the same Broadcom chipset, I would not be surprised to see it come out, anyway.

As for Samsung being a top tier product, well, if you read many other forums their are a lot of folks that would disagree with you when it comes to their BD players. Right now I'm leaning towards that camp. I called Samsung CS today and was told a new firmware was coming out in "1-1/2-2 weeks" I (ot they) only have the one and a half before I take it back.
