I am working with a bell 6100 hd. satellite receiver, sony kds-60A2000 1080p display and oppo dv-981 hd.dvd.the sat. receiver is connected via dvi (receiver) to hdmi (display),the dvd is hdmi at both ends.the sat. receiver highest seting is 1080i witch works fine for my 50 hd channels.the problem is the other 400 channels that are broadcast in standard mode or 480p.looking at the sony str-da5300es it claims to up-convert video with a user selectable output resolution and upscale analog source to 1080p.SO my question is will the sony avr. up-convert the standard or 480p signal from my bell 6100 to hd.

I have not owned it, or used it. I would not recommend it. I would recommend the Yamaha RX-V1800, Denon AVR-2808CI, Pioneer VSX-92TXH, Onkyo TX-SR875 all before the Sony.

If you are willing to spend that kind of money, you could get a Denon 885 pre/amp which is the same as the Integra and get an external amp... and have 10times the product then the Sony will deliver...

I will cut and paste the info here from your other thread...

stay with this thread...

I think the word your looking for here is Scaling... I believe the Sony with UpScale your 480i source to a 1080p. Although there have been threads that had suggested that you could do better in other brands.... I would suggest that you take your time and do a good amount of research here.

Upconverting is taking a composite, svcd, or component source and upcovert it to an HDMI output...

Scaling is changing the resolution of the picture, ie... 480p to 720p or 1080i or 1080p..

I do not own that receiver so I cannot speak + or - on it, but have read that the video section of that unit introduced artifacts...

Check out Onkyo or Denon, or Pioneer or Yamaha. Many people seem to shy away from the Sony here...

My beef with the Sony you are looking at, is it seems to offer very little in terms of amplification compared to competitors.

To Warpdrv;ok up scaling, great.my question is answered, these avr's can upscale a standard signal from my bell and output hd to my display will research the above mentioned avr's.for the price of these units you would hope they could do it all, but i guess not.I would probably lean towards the unit with the best up scaling.

Who is your satellite provider? I've never heard of Bell. Have you considered upgrading your satellite receiver? I have Dish Network and their VIP722 DVR has an excellent scaler built in. SD stations look very good.

How you can you say that. You've never had any experience with it. How exactly do you know the amp section is of poor quality??? Generally speaking Sony ES gear has good amplification. I think you need to tone down what you're saying.

To Hi Ho, Bell is Bell Expressview it is a satellite and telecommunication provider in Canada. I have five receivers and I don't want to change that end of it, but thanks for the suggestion. Your idea made me look at video scalers. They are very expensive, I'm still trying to find an AVR with a decent built in scaler.

Nice response! Seth is not the only one, you will soon learn that most people around here don't think much of Sony receivers. They do seem to respect their video products. I have had experience with a few Sony receivers; two ES and one real cheap 2 channel one and none had any reliability issues. That’s why once in a while I like to tell the other side of the story. Some ES models did receiver good reviews by a few U.K. and N.A. AV magazines.

I am sure some of those who would bash Sony receivers at every opportunity indeed have previous experience with the product, but I also bet there are some who simply went with hearsay. We all know how hearsay could appear to have become fact to some, given time.

Sony gets a bad rap for their receivers. I think they have had and still have some reliability problems in both their lower end TV's and audio gear. That said, they tend to put out a quality product when it comes to their high end stuff. In regard to their A/V receivers, I generally think that there are better options at the same price points. Hell, I opted for a Denon over the 5300 ES. That said, I think the 5300 ES is a real contender. It has 6 HDMI inputs, a great GUI, and tons of flexibility. Looking at it's amp stats, it is rated at .09 THD, which isn't that great for this expensive of a product. However, I'm sure it's sufficient for most speakers. It's just not going to handle heavy loads as well.

I just have a problem with people qualifying a statement and then going on to say, that is a bad product. It's tantamount to saying, "no offense," but your ugly. Just because you said "no offense" doesn't give you license to say anything you want.

Since I started this I'll get my two bits in.Sony was first out of the gate with a real GUI.& multiple hdmi inputs in a user friendly package.Every body else has been playing catchup.Unfortunatly from what I'v been reading the video scaling left much to be desired.Further research reports the Denon AVR3808ci has four hdmi inputs, exallent GUI.and the best video scaling seen yet.At $1600 thats $100 less than the sony 5300.A couple reviews said it was not so user friendly.
