JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer - thoughts

Amazon has the JBL Venue Series SUB12 12-Inch 500-Watt Subwoofer for $200.48 with free shipping no tax. Reg price is $429.99. I only have about $200 to spend on a sub before the finance committe cuts me off. I was looking at the BIC h-100 but after shipping it's around $250 and the Dayton sub 120 for about $200 after shipping at parts express.

Is the JBL a steal or is this a POS sub. I just want a decent HT sub. Don't care about room size or set up. I just want to hear the low 20's bass sounds and that's it while watching transformers or U-571. I only use the sub about 20% of the time that I have my HT going.

Read the reviews on Amazon. Many people seem to like to it. And for only $200, it's a bargain. You can pay a lot more money for a much lesser sub.

Yes I read them. Again I ask "Are you Kidding Me"?

All three of these subs are great options that will most likely out perform the JBL in question. Another plus is if later you need more output these subs work great in multiples - especially at this price point. If you have four of the first two suggested subs you will have higher quality output offered than available in any other single subwoofer at any price point.

I've had good luck with my little Sony sub. Don't laugh, it's been a real trooper for me over the years and performs well for what it is. Subs in the $200 category will always have limitations, but I think the Sony SA-W3000 for $199 w/free shipping will be more than an admirable performer in this range.

The JBL sub isn't a steal nor is it a POS either. You just need to understand what you are getting for $200. But if you really want something for the "low 20s" look elsewhere. I had a pair of JBL E250P a couple years ago and they are only useful down to approximately 28Hz. The venue sub is almost the exact same design.

To the OP - For $200 it's going to be somewhat challenging to get you what you're looking for. I had the JBL sub you are asking about for a while - ask Mazer - and I ended up returning it. I was trying to spend as little as possible and still get a great sound.

The JBL Sub 12 looks nice, but its performance leaves a lot to be desired IMO. It has no detail, and below 60-70 Hz, notes become indistinguishable. I don't think it was able to even reach it's rated spec of 25 Hz with any significant output, let alone down to the low 20's where you're aiming for. Very sloppy and boomy, despite its impressive wattage, and LOTS of port noise.

I don't know if I can suggest an alternative for you in the $200 range, as I ended up having to spend the extra bucks on a good SVS sub which has done me VERY well so far. But I had the cash to spend at the time, it may not be as easy in your case.

I hope this post helps - not trying to slam JBL for the sake of slamming them, just trying to help you avoid the exact same scenario I found myself in several weeks ago.

Those Dayton subs get really good reviews and might be in the price range you're comfortable with. Just make sure anything you buy direct from the internet has a return policy.
