Weight Problem

This is a terrible post I apologize... but I just recieved the Halo A51 Amplifier. Paid 3500 for it so I'm a little nervous. My stand http://www.racksandstands.com/Powell-Furniture-633-276-PW2243.html says the top shelf is rated for the 79 pound max. The top shelf is the only shelf it will fit on. The Halo A51 is 80 pounds. I know I know only a one pound difference. I'm still concerned. Any opinions?

Hard to say. If its rated for 79lbs then common sense tells me it will support more than that. I wouldnt put it on one of the lower shelves that dont look like they are supported but in the corners on the glass. That could end up badly! The very bottom shelf would be my first choice since it will be pretty top heavy with 80lbs on the very top. You may want to even consider just getting something to set it on, on the side.

Well it's time for bed so I'm gonna put it to the test. If I am awakened to a loud crash tonight and find all my gear on the ground in the morning I will jump off my roof lol.

I wouldn't put it on top. That is just me. Bottom shelf is where I would call home for that bad boy. As long as there is no heat issue on the bottom.

It would scare the hell out of me and I would consider some alternative.

Worst case scenario, it will crack the glass shelf. Easy fix. Just go to a glass store and have them cut a thicker piece of tempered glass.

Worst case is it pulls the tabs out of the frame and the whole thing falls ruining his new amp and some things under it as well as the floor!

This is what I would do.

Get another glass piece 1" thick (special cut to exactly match the top piece) and place it on top of the current top piece to REINFORCE it.

It looks to me like the top shelf is fully supported by the corner uprights of the unit. The OP is going to have to make a judgment call on the spot.

Uh oh I thought I was being hyper and people would tell me to calm down it's only a pound over. Its sitting there right now and I'm at work and can't take it down ahhhh. It didn't fall last night though so I should be alright but I'll probably take it down now and see where else I can put it. It just looks soo nice up there as my onkyo is on the top of the other matching stand on the other side of the tv so it's very balanced. The onkyo only ways 51 pounds though!

Ok, you forced me to look at the picture and you are correct. It is frame supported and should be fine but I would take the advice from Dave and AccuDT and have another piece of glass cut for it.

If it's still standing after 24 hours, it'll likely last 24 years.

I know how you're feeling, though. When I hung my surrounds, I left half-full laundry baskets under each one for the first night so that the speakers wouldn't get damaged in case they fell.

Last year I hung a heavy wood framed mirror in the bedroom. Being lazy and the family almost hear for the Holidays I used a 50lb picture hook in the sheetrock. The mirror was 48lbs so good to go ...right?

At 3am we heard the crash. The mirror slid down the wall leaving sheetrock damage then hit the electrical outlet which sheared off and pulled the wires. The whole house may off caught fire had we not been at home. So being lazy cost me an electrician fee, sheetrock repair, paint and a new $300 mirror.

I hung the 2nd one properly.

Which reminds me; I hung my acoustic panels with those miracle hangers. I remember when we saw the commericial on TV and laughed at it. The Ready Acoustic frames came with a set and I thought what the heck. My wife reminded me of the mirror accident and noted that if the panels fall they will knock my speakers over which will hit the TV and knock it over and everything will tear up the Hardwoods. I am trying them anyway.

Thanks Dave - It made it through the night so it should be fine. The glass is pretty thick.
