Hey, I just found this forum today & I am impressed. As I delineated in my devirginating post, I am just now returning to the world of audiophilism. I had to take a 12-yr hiatus due to educational/professional aspirations (fancy way to say I was dirt-poor during med school, residency & fellowship). But, THANK GOD, all of that is coming to an end pretty soon - I complete my training in Aug 08 & am on the job-hunt trail now.

Anyhow, enough of the boring details about me. I have some questions about these forums?

1 - I see that there are 'rankings' under our usernames. What are the breaking points to earn our way up the foodchain?

2 - I see that some folks have avatars & signatures. Is that something I 'earn' as I move up the foodchain?

3 - More on topic, does anyone know of or can recommend a concise reference on the world of audio/video equipment & home theater? Years ago, I used to sell A/V equipment & was pretty well on top of the technology. But, that was back in the late 80s & early 90s. Now, I find myself a wee tad behind...make that waaaaaaay behind. I would love to have a text or texts to bring me back up to speed. It would be downright embarassing to get snookered by some slick salesdude using fancy, 50-cent words just because I was out of the loop on the tech & lingo.

You have to spend cash on Audio/Video gear. The more you spend the higher your ranking.

Upper left side toward the top of the page you'll see "User CP". Click that, and you will see where to edit your avatar, and signature.

Those are just there to be cute. But they change as your post count goes up.

2 - I see that some folks have avatars & signatures. Is that something I 'earn' as I move up the foodchain?

This is for all users, the only restriction is that you must have so many posts to put hyper links in messages.

To add you avatar, your profile and signature, go to the User CP at the top left in the menu bar. Anybody can upload avatars, signature pictures, create a text signature, and more

The only avatars not aloud on Audioholics are Red Sox, and Patriot avatars. All other are OK.

Reputation points, the thanks help, the scale thing does to. It is in the upper right hand corner of each post next to the post number.

Do you see where the post is numbered to the top right? Next to it is a image of a scale. Click on the scale and you can give positive or negative feedback for a post. It will say "I Approve" or "I Disapprove". The more positive feedback you receive the more Green Dots (Chicklets) you receive.

You have already found the concise reference source for A/V. Anything you need can most likely be found using the search function or by simply asking. Welcome aboard.

As Davemcc said, this site is a good source. Look in the "Get an A/V Education" section.

Of course, if you really want to be truly hard core - the most important thing is to never enjoy listening to music or movies, but to instead obsess about speaker placement, crossovers, equipment upgrades, etc. while listening.

I'll second that! I live up here in Sox/Pats country & I CANNOT STAND the Pats! Now I have to live with all of their gloating & bragging, especially after they beat my Steelers! Still morning over that!
